Bradford in the early 1800s had more brothels than public houses, rape, disease and violence were rampant. Things haven't changed at all.
There never was a "golden age" of safety. The only reason why people never used to lock their houses was because they didn't have owt worth nicking.
we discussed this is my child protection class as in is child abuse on the increase or are people just more aware of it now because of press.
crime and abuse has been going on since time began.
and it is true that there was nowt worth nicking and you could leave your door open. our great consumer society has increased greed and violence and dishonesty.
I know that government study for the years 1890-92 found only three handgun homicides, an average of one a year, in a population of 30 million. In 1904 there were only four armed robberies in London, then the largest city in the world. Crime rate in UK was dropping during 19 century and was rising during 20th century.

Things go as they must go. In 1800’s the country developed toward less State’s power and more individual freedom and capitalism. In 1900’s the reverse button have been pushed and the country is falling into socialism and democracy. Freedom and responsibility tend to walk hand in hand and if individual freedom is grabbed by ’society’ ( as politicians name themselves) responsibility has nothing but to follow its sibling.
It is an axiom for all countries and all times.
I don't think they are really. You just get more aware as you get older and more aware of your own mortality.
what makes it all stand out to me is the fact that I ...me ...has to have security cameras and extra locks. the streets are full of cameras as are the shops. not becuase the technology is available but cos we don't trust each other anymore.

Oh Mr Roll, is it just me or do i remember the two of us having an extremley long debate on this topic a long time ago.
Its not that things have got worse ... its that our awareness of the problems have got better. We are bombarded with the world's evils by the tv, papers and the internet. We create ever more mediums with which to inform us of our own misbehaviour. Fifty years ago people just didn't know that the various problems were happening.

No because the teachers were beating the students. Because there weren't as many students.
Were the teachers not beat up because the students had better morals than today or because if they even looked at them funny they had a stick smashed on their wrist?

totally true though.
on my parent's street, all the neighbours chat, so i know that the man 2 doors down had his door smashed down a few weeks ago, the woman opposite was burgled a few months ago, and the 95-year-old lady next door had her house broken into last year. so when i'm in their house, i feel edgy. i don't feel safe, cause i know exactly what happened in each case.
in my house i used to feel safe, cause i didn't know all the scary details. then we were burgled, and we found out from the policeman that virtually all the houses on my street had been burgled in the last year, and i am actually a whole lot safer in my parent's house.

Is a comparison with 5 years ago realistic and have you applied the understanding of Statistical Process Control to these figures?
This would allow you to understand whether these are what can be considered "normal" crime levels for your area, or if something specific has changed...?
The example would be a journey, by car, to the same destination everyday. Sometimes you will catch every lights at red, sometimes at green. This mean that although the journey had route may remain the same, the time it takes you can differ. Therefore if you just compared an "all-red" day with an "all-green" day you would say that your journey had got a lot worst, when in reality there was always the statitiscal probability that this would happen, whatever else you did...
