Drug treatment US style

Obviously there is a legal seperation between Church and State in the US.

However Bush has anounced that he will fund Church based drug treatment to the tune of $100m.

Heres the link;

Personally I think this is a bit of a mockery, yes drug treatment is a good thing to put money in, but to put it only into Church based groups is very suspect to my mind.
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

A secular state should not be paying taxpayer money to non-profit, non-taxable religious organisations unless its prepared to start taxing those organisations in response to such public funding.

This administration has not ceased to make a mockery of the Constitution since it took office.

Exactly what I was thinking. They will just say it is a sin or do something along the lines of the promoting abstinance which will also fail miserably. I cant stand these Far Christian Right Bush Lackeys

in this part of country there are a number of "church/christian" based rehabs/treatment centres, and the places are pretty much always packed with waiting list of people to get in.

    why is this?

Is it because people want to go there?
Is it because the other option is a psychiatric hospital and a shrink after an 8 month wait?
Is it because the workers and volunteers care?
Is it because those that go find a way out of there problems?

in my experience these places don't preach or even teach Christianity it is simply a structure to place care in.

    anyway just some thoughts

Of course, there are many Christian hospices and they do excellent work.

Yes this move is a suspect one, but that does NOT mean that all the groups getting money are just going to use drug re-hab as a means to extend their Church.

It is the decision that the money will ONLY go to Church based groups that angered me. This is unfair and stupid.

That the money should go to non-taxable organisations in the first place should be the sticking point BB. No tax dollars should be given to agencies other than those accountable to the public from whence their budgets are derived.

Chruch and faith-based organisations have their constitutent members from whence to fund their activities, not the public coffer.
