British FBI

So what does everyone think?

I think its a good idea as it will be an agency that can soley focus on the job at hand rather than be tied down by petty matters such as stolen cars, pub fights and football hooligans.

It is a good idea, although I do doubt it will work. I'm sure (though don't have evidence to show) that this same scheme was introduced ten years ago and was put on hold or dismissed because a whole load of policemen and women were at the centre of an organised crime ring. Who's to say that won't happen again! I do hope it works out though, like Bomberman said, the agency could focus on the job at hand..

Why not legalise drugs? Then you end the 'drugs war' and take out most 'organised crime'!

The analogy with the FBI is insane, for two reasons:
    1. MI5 is our equivelent internal security agency
    2. The FBI covers a slightly larger country than ikkle Blighty
I'm not sure if it's a good idea - I don't know what cases they're taking up and what powers they'd have. Although I can't really see the need. In America it's necessary because the country is so big, it must have something to hold all its various police forces together, wheras in the UK there's not a lot that standard police forces couldn't handle.

    was thinking something similar

I am aware it isn't like the FBI its just seeing as everyone using that analogy it seemed a good way of expressing it. Surely you can see benefits of a specialised unit? For example armed police are a specialised unit and are from what I gather very effective surely more so than giving every officer a handgun so why not have specialised units for organised crime?

what about scotland yard? drugs squad? MI5? the Metropolitan Police? surely further dividing the police in this country wont do too much good? I think that more active officers on the beat where they can be seen as a presence; especially in areas with bad crime problems, would be a better use of resources.

A lot of crime is organised but don't forget than teenagers are turning to crime more and more as they get into gangs; this is becoming a rising problem and a specialist squad isn't going to combat this, I don't think

MI5 is an investigating organisation they do not make arrests they gather information. They cannot be compared to what is being suggested. This is a full specialist unit with powers and the money to directly combat big buisness crime and hopefully be much less prone to corruption. If implemented well this is a very good idea.

The article on the BBC website says this about it -
It will bring together the responsibilities of the National Criminal Intelligence Service, the National Crime Squad, parts of the Immigration Service and of Customs and Excise

This may well help, however I am very concerned the powers we are giving to law enforcement agencies in the course of tracking down criminals.

If you look at some of the new asset taking laws for example we have de facto gotten rid of jury trials and being inocent till proven guilty.

Customs can take ALL my assets, stop all my money and then I have to prove that I got those through legal means, if I cant then the government gets them.

SO, I would have to defend myself, on legal aid, if I got it, NOT on my own assets.

This is a discrace, its a mockery of justice, it is an assuption of guilt.
