Newspapers/Tabloids.

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I've never given them too much attention, but I'm wondering what their views are. Could someone educate me please? This came from reading about Angus Deayton and reading a few extracts from the Daily Mirror, are they the hard bastards of the tabloid world or something? Forgive my ignorance on the subject.

Tabloids in general = low brow 'journalism' with little focus on real issues and with an agenda to push. Of all the tabloids the Mirror is the only one with a bit of a social conscience.

The S*n = an utterly worthless mouthpiece for the ultra right wing, manipulative and extremely dangerous Rupert Murdoch. A tabloid with a long honourable tradition of xenophobia, homophobia, racism and bullying. A disgrace to the profession.

The Daily Hatemail (aka the Daily BlackMail, aka the Daily Mosley) = the single most dangerous, disgusting, racist, homophobic, xenophobic, Christian fundamentalist, appalling piece of garbage the world has ever seen. A long history of anti-semitism and support for fascism everywhere including of the Nazis themselves as well as Franco, Pinochet and other such illustrious figures and regimes. A manipulative, lying, corrosive 'Christian Family Values' flag carrier that likes nothing more than bashing single mothers or, the homosexuals. Without a doubt, the most hideous and disgusting publication in the whole of Europe, possibly the world.

Newspapers have their agendas to push as well but they are generally okay.

    I hope that's been of help. :)

I'm no fan of tabloids but even some of the more "high brow" broadsheets speak utter gobshite from time to time.

You need the tabloids just as much as the broadsheets. First thing in the morning I'd rather wake up to a pair of tits and "easy on the head" news and when I've actually woken up later in the day and able to comprehend things beyond Big Brother and some clown like Richard Littlejohns psudo-Nuremburg rantings then I can read a newspaper that delivers news and puts the little grey cells into gear.

But TV's going down the same track. You've now got "tabloid" TV news (snazzed up ITV) and "broadsheet" TV news (BBC news 24)

Thanks, that was some help. I did actually mean the Daily Mail, not the Mirror so I cocked up there. Thanks for explaining.

I don't like tabloids too much, though they're easy to understand and sometimes quite amusing... not in the way the journalists want.

Oh and they have naked chicks in.

The Mail is actually a pretty good paper, but its not as good as the Telegraph.

I dont know where you got all that nonsense from.

And the Mirror is the worst tabloid around.

I suppose it is if you are an atheist marxist.

Aladdin, out of interest- do you take every word from newspapers such as The Guardian or The Observer as Gospel, and disparage every word printed in The Times or The Telegraph?

Just wondering, because what Matadore says backs my view- people onyl read what they want to read, and only see bias when it is their opponents using it.

With that rant people could accuse you of the same thing....

I do agree with you though. Some of the stuff in the Mail is uite interesting, but if you listen to them you'd think that the country was swamped with drugs, infested with crime and the economy was going down the pan.
    Wait, it is

    No wonder you like it.

    In your opinion.

I've never seen the Mail support Nazism or Musolinism, and I don't see the Mail supporting Mugabe. It was against the Khmer Rouge, it was against Indonesia's occupation of East Timor.

I think what you mean to say is that the Mail is against socialism. Which is fair enough, just because the extremist viewpoint is red doesn't mean that the extremist viewpoint is any les dangerous.

The Mail also supported Mosley and the BUF.

It still supports racist ideas now. There is a definite continuity of editorial policy.

I assume that you're referring to Pinochet.

I don't think that was particularly a case of supporting Fascism per se, I think it was more a matter of seeking to destroy Communism by whatever means necessary- which is the same reason Reagan and Thatcher supported the scumbag.

The support for Mosley, Hitler and the BUF and the Mail's continuing racist editorial policy. There is a continuity there.

    Albeit to a lesser extent.
It's just a shame that the Mails editorial policy represents the views of most of the disenchanted people living in the UK today.
You ask any bloke in a pub what he thinks of Al-Qaeda, Muslims, and any other topical issue mentioned in the Daily Mail he'll most likely agree with it.
If he didn't agree with it you'll find he'll be reading a different newspaper altogether.

    I can :p
One of the best descriptions of British newspapers is in this episode:

"The Times" is read by the people who run the country.
The "Daily Mirror" is read by the people who think they run the country.
"The Guardian" is read by the people who think they ought to run the country.
"The Independent" is read by people who don't know who runs the country but are sure they're doing it wrong.
The "Daily Mail" is read by the wives of the people who run the country.
The "Financial Times" is read by the people who own the country. The "Daily Express" is read by the people who think the country ought to be run as it used to be run.
The "Daily Telegraph" is read by the people who still think it is their country.
And the "Sun's" readers don't care who runs the country providing she has big tits."

Which comes first though? The opinions of the bod on the street or the tabloids racist lies? If you actually educate most people to the facts, then they usually change their minds.
