I hope you said something to guide them on their way, because people used to believe that a star fell when someone died, and so you had to say something like "My god guide you" when you saw one to make sure they pass on OK.

My fav story about them is that people used to beleieve that every so often the gods check up on us, and so take off the roof of the world to have a peak. But each time they do it a bit falls off and is the shooting star. Hence wishing on stars because it means that the gods are looking and listenening and so will hear.

I love little stories like that :)

Over the summer when I was in Botswana, for a couple of nights I slept outside next to this lagoon in the Okavango we were camping at. My friends thought i was mad, but it was worth it... i could just lie there and see infinite stars, many shooting stars... the sky was so clear and beautiful. I did the same thing when I was in Jordan a few years ago too. I highly reccomend it, though if you don't like creepy crawlies its not a good idea...

when we were in France a couple of years ago, i camped out for a couple of nights on the beach with a friend I met over there, he told me all this philosophical shit as we looked over at Venus, that was magnificant, and the number of shooting stars out there was amazing, there was at least one every 5 minutes. So beautiful.

its not something i've ever experienced over here though.

We once thought we saw a flying saucer, but then we were drunk.

On a clear night away from the city's light polloution it's quite easy to see satallites (sp?) heading across the sky. They look like stars except for the fact that they're moving at a reasonable speed from one side of the sky to the other.

In summer we used to (and still do to some extent) go up on the heath not far from where I live, with no more than a sleeping bag and a bag of weed and just kip on the heather and smoke. Quite often you'll see small 'showers' of shooting stars.

Yeah, even when there are no clouds there's hardly any stars...

I go home to Scotland and its amazing how much you can see... I even saw the northern lights last time i was up there a couple of weeks ago, and that wasn't even during those sunspot storms!
