@independent_ we will just get a closed thread and a “we under your frustrations blah blah blah” lmao
Sometimes when the people most like you don't love you, it is a hurt that can cause the greatest pain, and this pain can lead you to hate everything.

People are feeling really stressed and confused about this, but I think there are a few really important points:

    1. DMs were cut off incredibly suddenly, after people have built relationships.
    2. They are working for some but not others
    3. If it's a choice by the platform rather than law, who made it, and do they know anything about community?
    4. Most of the active users here are young adults, rather than children, and should be able to make our own decisions about how we communicate.

Thing is it has remained a very respectful discussion between us and hasn't really been derailed, so I wouldn't think it's against guidelines to have a thread like this running.

What changes apart from the day time general chat has happened, like ok that's helpful, that's great tbh, I didnt think it was helpful but it is so cool. What else has been changed though? They have said they are recruiting new mods and working hard to make chat schedules more reliable, had meetings but it's all been just words. There's maybe a few mods being recruited but it's possible that's a lie too. It's become more unreliable with these "improvements".

Recruiting new mods is definitely happening, I can see the advert on the volunteer page. But I guess that takes time given the number we lost a few months ago. And I love the daytime GC.

I listed 10 negative changes further back in the thread, but I too am struggling to think of positives other than that at the moment.

The safeguarding changes are actually broadly positive as well if you think about them. They improve protection for children and vulnerable adults, even if sometimes things are escalated that I think might be OTT.

Ok fair enough but I feel the advertising needs to happen more across all social media platforms where it might reach young people who want to mod. Safeguarding is definitely important it is number 1 priority but there's surely other ways for safety than pulling pms all together, it's stopping us all from talking to each other, sometimes it feels more comfortable to talk private messages rather than on boards here. It's definitely OTT.

I should clarify by the safeguarding changes, I mean the confidentiality policy, not the removal of DMs. DMs on here can still be moderated if necessary.

Deleting DMs isn't for safeguarding it's about control, I hate controlling people

There's no advertising about new mods here, there's been the odd story but that's not good enough, what would be great is putting a post on every social media platform that new mods are being recruited. It might be on the website that there's recruitment for volunteers but how's that meant to reach people? The best way to reach young people who potentially want to mod is social media because that's what people use like put a post out and people keep sharing etc.

Hello everyone, I’m Owen, The Community Manager. You might’ve seen me in the chat spaces over the last few weeks. Thank you so much for all your feedback and comments. As we explained in the original post, the decision to turn off Direct Messages (DMs) was made to follow the law and to prioritise the safety of everyone using this space. However, we want to be honest with you - we were not aware that our developers were going to switch off the DMs without giving us any prior warning, as happened yesterday. This meant that you found out about the change before we had the chance to explain it properly, and we are truly sorry for the stress and upset this has caused.

We’ve met as a team this morning to go over everything you’ve raised, and we’ve asked for an urgent meeting with our developers (who are based in the US, so we’re hoping to speak with them this afternoon) to discuss whether there’s a way to allow you to access your old, historical messages. We understand why this matters to you, and we’re doing all we can to explore that possibility. As soon as we have met with our developers and discussed this with them, we will post the FAQs we have been putting together about this change.

We completely understand your frustrations and how this sudden change has affected you. Please know that we take this seriously and we acknowledge the impact this has had. We are here, we are listening, and we will keep you updated as soon as we know more.

It depends how much it offends the higher ups I guess.

As @Redemption has said, they are very controlling, and I wouldn't be surprised if they deleted everything that goes against their schemes or paints them in a bad picture.

Thank you for the update @Owen. It's pretty shocking that you weren't informed either.

Also, some people can still PM, and most of us can still reply to PMs that we are already sent. If this is going to change, an update would be great so we can wrap up conversations we are having.

I don't think any of this changes how anyone feels. Historical messages were very important to many of us, and someone's just clicked and deleted them all.

It certainly feels like this @JJLemon18. I still have so many questions.. most of them already posted here, but they are worth repeating.

Where in the law does it say a site has to disable DMs entirely for its entire userbase, when a majority of that userbase are legally adults? I think that is my main question.

In addition, some communication is broken somewhere, and people weren't even allowed to wrap things up and cannot see historical messages.

@independent_ you dont believe how upset all these changes make me, I have too many questions and frankly no energy to ask any. It wont change anything it seems, their system has become too corrupt too soon.

Its sad to see theres still so many people here who havent left already, it shows how much people still believe in this community, how many people need this place. Its sad that whoever owns this site now doesnt see how many lives they are hurting. So much for a mental health peer support site...

Cool, but surely we could look at alternatives without switching of DM's. Two systems of DM's, one for over 18's, and one for under 18's and prevent DM's between the two groups, or perhaps we could just have moderated DM's. Heck AI could help to moderate if it's an issue of workload for moderators. There are solutions that exist besides shutting off DM's outright. I get it's the safest most law compliant way, but it's not the only safe law compliant way is what I'm trying to say. We could still retain large amounts of the community, and uphold safeguarding in such a way. it somewhat feels like they've jumped to the most extreme solution outright you know.

Side by side is indeed similar to the mix, but I haven't used it too much. It does, however, have a DM function, for anyone interested.

the only thing is, mind is for those in england / wales only to my knowledge, i know it definitely excludes northern ireland, and very sure it also excludes scotland too, so would that mean that people from outside of england / wales cannot then access side by side too, since it’s a mind service i wonder

It just says UK as far as I know @shannon_164. I'm in Scotland and I'm using it right now. Most of minds other services do exclude those places, you can't access the groups they run etc and most of the info on their website is for england/wales, but I think anyone in the UK can use SBS.

That said, i'm happy to drop them a DM and ask for you if you want? They also don't geofence.
