Friendships / loneliness

I’m scared to talk about this but I’ve seen a few posts about friendships and loneliness so I feel less scared about opening up so basically I want friends but my communication skills aren’t the best (I don’t talk verbally to people until I feel comfortable around them and trust them) I also don’t understand what a healthy friendship is and how to make friends I have really bad anxiety but I do also have ASD and ADHD I mask both of my ASD and ADHD but then I unmask with people I trust and feel comfortable around for example my ADHD makes me hyperactive and I talk a lot and my brain is on the go constantly ASD causes me to have sensory issues but I would say I am a kind person I’m just so anxious and my ADHD can make me to much for other people I would really love to make friends does anyone have any advice or tips thank you🫶🏻

    I wish I could provide some useful advice/tips @Summerjune15. All I can say, as an autistic person with similiar struggles, is it never means you are an unkind person and it is super important you keep remembering how kind you are! These difficulties never make you less.

    Focusing on my interests and finding my people is the thing that has helped the most. This is along with an increase in feeling confident to go places and do things by myself, rather than feeling like I must always do things with other people! I guess you could say that is reducing the perceived expectation?

    Have any of our wonderful community members got any further thoughts or ideas?

    I’m just autistic, I don’t have ADHD but the thing that helped me the most was meeting other autistic people. My uni ran this group where we could all come together and as someone with awful social anxiety who really struggles to socialise, it was a lot easier in a group of other autistic people. Have you looked into any autism/ADHD support groups in your area? I know it would probably be scary to go for the first time but they should hopefully have support in place for that. Maybe you could ask your GP / any other support worker if there’s anything they’d recommend?
