Sexual preference

Right, we all know homosexualtiy exists and hetrosexuality exits but have you ever thought there could be people who have no sexual preference, at all? Its a question that came up with me and my friends over the weekend. We all agree it could be possible, even though the reason were here is to pro-create, so being attracted to the opposite sex, is a way of continuing our race etc. Gay people though, cannot naturally conceive together naturally, so they dont have this instinct of being attracted to someone, that they could conceive with.
Has anyone ever heard of this? Do you think its possible? Do you know someone like this?

I have heard that it is possible to have no sexual preference (i.e. not be attracted to anyone). It does make sense. As you say, if we were only attracted to people with a view to procreate, how would homosexuality have come about?

Hmmm. One to ponder. I do find it hard to imagine, not being attracted to anyone. I wonder if you can fall in love without being attracted to someone... You probably can't, can you? So it might save a lot of heartache!

Yes, I believe that people like this are referred to as being "asexual" although this isn't a true definition of the word.

Very often they have no interest in sex with either gender (otherwise they would be gay/bisexual).

While at the other end of the scale you get trisexuals (will try anything once) ;) and loads of people who swing both ways even though they might like one sex more than another.

There is always time to breed later in life, if some people wish to do so.

Yep, there are many different preferences  but do you personally think, there could be people that dont fancy anyone?

I'm trisexual, I like men, women and scousers!

Seriously though, maybe people who have no interest in sex are depressed or something, as it is a sign of depression. Who knows?

I am guessing that the main reason for a lack of interest in sex is old age...............

well there are plenty of people who live celibate lives, maybe some people just don't have the drive just as there are people who have too much of it - (grumbles)

    I think I'm an asexual wanker! :eek2:

I just don't get as excited about women (or even men) as some others seem to. All my freinds spend most of their time talking about whether Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera is hotttest, or how many times they "pulled" on a night out.

Me? I don't "pull", I don't try to "pull" and I don't find Aguilera or Spears that hot.

captain ...don't worry about it. i've always been a horny bastard but have had freinds who have never been that interested. the trouble with this modern world is sex is floated and advertised as THEE thing. something wrong with you if your not part of it all. that isn't what humanity and being human is about surely.

    I'd aggree with that.

Why is it that its almost totaly acceptable, almost attractive for females to be bisexual, but with men its seen as 'weird'?

As most things are men orientated, this is mainly a man thing.

That's a bit like saying that because a flipped coin can come down heads or tails, it's possible that it could also be neither, when actually, for all practical purposes, it's always going to be one or the other. A sex drive, like a river, may turn one way or the other, but it rarely just stops. It will manifest itself in some way.

Perhaps the error is to assume that 'continuing the race' implies producing only heterosexual children. Homosexuals might have no children themselves, but they still feel an affinity for their kindred. If their nurturing instincts are re-directed into helping their parents to raise their siblings, that increases the chances of those siblings surviving to have children of their own. Richard Dawkins covered this in greater detail. It's the matter of a brother bearing a closer genetic resemblance to a sibling than the child that they might have with an unrelated woman. Of course, that sibling will also have a child who's not as closely related (incest being genetically taboo because of recessive genes), but that child still has more chance of surviving than the other child would, so there's evolutionary pressure right there.

So, how do you explain this...

The coin metaphor doesnt work, because that suggests that people are either totaly gay or totaly not, and thats rubbish.

I think its more a spectrum, personally, with black being straight and white being gay and most people being a shade of grey.

    I agree...

I'd also argue that homosexuality has genetic roots and I don't believe a person has to fall in to either categories. I think that a lot of people change as well, or maybe repress or explore their feelings to find what suits them.

A lot of teenagers for example fancy members of the same sex whether we admit to it or not), which is apparently only a part of growing up. What makes you officially gay, straight or bisexual anyway? I mean you could sleep with both genders, but what about relayionships? How far you'd go with them sexually? What pornography you watch?
