£1 Billion - To Mark The new century

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
The government decided to mark the turn of the new century by building te world's largest tent in London, just wondering if you had te same kind of money to spend (approx £1 Billion) - how would you have spent it?

Personally I think I'd have divided the money into maybe 50 and spent £20 Million on 50 Community/Sports/Activity Centres around the entire country so more people would have benefited on a daily basis.

I'd have built a place where the old have somewhere to go during the day instead of being stuck at home, young people have to go after school and teenagers have to go on the weekends without it costing them a bomb.

I don't see why all that money should have been spent in only London, and think it's really unfair.

So if it was up to you how would you have marked the occassion?

along with the other billion spent on getting ready or trying to prevent electronic breakdown of every service you use from water to cash machines and cash registers ...all going to die at midnight 00! what a load of bollox that turned out to be. don't you just want to throttle an expert occasionaly.
with the 2 billion i would have built a street called millenium street in every town, with affordable houses and rentables.

Actually I think companies did go overboard on Y2K but there was actually Y2K issues that appeared but not on 2000 but long before in 1999 and before.

I worked on Y2K for a large comany and most of their issues came up well in advance of the year 2000 - like for example someone wanting to pay their bill in 1998 on a credit card that expired in 2002 .. these kind of issues were dealt with well in advance of 2000 which is why so little happened on the stroke of midnight.

BTW I like the idea of the street in every town !!

TBH if they'd actually made the Millennium Dome the world's largest circus I think it would have been a huge hit!!

Instead they filled it with junk from British Telecom and other companies.

I bet if they made it part Circus and part Casino it would bring in loads of money into the UK. Probabaly no where near as much as it cost to build but a lot more them Ministry of Sound pay once a year to use it.

It's shaped like a circus tent so might as turn it into one!!

The Millenium bug was a very real threat. One of the Uni tutors told us about a few of the problems encountered while testing for it. For example, a sewage plant that dumped 200,000 gallons of raw sewage into a river due to a hiccup with the bug.
Yes, a lot of emphasis was placed upon it, but the problem was all the doom and gloom merchants popping up on the telly every damn five minutes saying how the world was going to end because of it, blah blah blah.

Oh I dunno! It didn't stay as the Millenium Dome for long though did it. They sold it or something. Waste of money.

The plant was somewhere in the States. He was also telling us that a lot of large companies kept quiet about some of the problems they encounterd, so that the wouldn't panic stock holders, etc.

What would I spend 1 billion on. I honestly don' t know. I mean, if we're talking about spending 1 billion to celebrate the Millenium, then I don't think the dome was the best way to spend it, but I like the dome. Wish I'd been to see it while it was still had all the millenium exhibitions there.
