National Volunteer Scheme

If there was a national volunteer scheme where you donate 1 day a month to do something in you local community, working with other people on the same scheme would you join?

And if so what use would you like to see your muscle put to?

Helping in an old filks home?
Removing graffitti off walls?
Installing Smoke detectors in the homes of the elderly?
Helping out in an NHS hospital?

.. your own suggestions ..?

There are lots of volunteer schemes, but people aren't aware of them. Visit www.timebank.co.uk

the only problem with the ones in my area is that they all want references from people before you can give your time, not much good if you're someone trying to turn over a new leaf!!

I was thinking more along the lines of national service - I think it would be good in some ways if people of around 16 had to do about 3 months of national service but not in the military but doing some kind of volunteer work .. maybe something similar to what Prince William did but in this country and more in people's own local communities.
