RAF - Good or Bad?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
OK, bit of a tricky one here. I could do with some advice about my future from some random group of strangers :)

I'm thinking of joining the Royal Air-Force. Some people think this is a good thing, some think it's bad.

Could I ask everyone here to please reply to this post saying whether you think a job in the RAF is a good or bad idea and why?

I'm not asking whether you think it'd suit me best, hense no background info, I just want to know if you think is a good job or not to take.

If you're interested, I was planning on being an officer - heading into Fighter Controller branch

Well i dunno about the UK, but it's pretty great over here in australia. Good money, cheap loans, free health, subsidised living and food.

think uve gotta have a few years experience to be an officer but if its what u want go for it, my mates in there - cant remember exactly what he does but i remember he had to be taught how to move his right eye up and down while his left eye stopped in the middle :crazyeyes

No, that girl will be meeeeeeeee

But seriously I think the RAF is a great career ... anything in the forces is.

But it all depends on what you truly want ... I think to do the job that you most want to do is the most important factor ... not the pay, perks or uniform

Although I'll admit the guy in uniform thing would really work for me as well!!! But it's the person inside the uniform that matters! :D

    Mmmm, men in uniform :)

Yeah, good idea :D not just cos of that, of course! It's a secure job with an obvious line for promotion, I'd imagine it's very exciting and rewarding, and as with all the armed forces it has a huge variety of jobs within it in case you want a change.

BUT I'd say downsides are that pay isn't brilliant, and it's hardly a 9-5 job - very unpredictable and depending on where you're based, could involve long periods of time away from family/friends/girlfriend. Not that I'm mentioning that because I'm bitter at my boyfriend being based in Germany. oh, no.

On the topic of the RAF can anyone tell me what the height restriction of a fighter pilot is in the RAF?Becuase its what i wanna be but I think im too tall now or if i carry on growing I will be.

I used to be in the school RAF which was a complete doss. And what's more, i wasn't there half the time.

But joining the RAF is a good thing, it can give you opportunities apart from being blown up in the sky.

You could change your mind half way through and go into commercial air flight with an experience off the RAF behind you.

Well think about wether you really want to go fight for your country and what this country is fighting for ..which is obivously world dominiation.

cause we know blair wont get back in but the next prime minister is bound to be as butt sniffing as him =)

The RAF is not a good idea if you don't like the thought of fighting the enemy from the skys or if you are afraid of heights.

But it is honourable and a lot of people would look up to you and respect you.

It is challenging and hard work but if you enjoy it then you should keep with it.

its fantastic, as long as youve got the grades to get in.

Our minimum requirement for commissioned officers is
2A/A2 levels or 3 Scottish Highers passes,
    plus 5 GCSEs/SCEs (Grade C/3),
including English Language and Maths. Graduates
or qualified entrants may be offered enhanced
    promotion and starting pay.
A number of specialisations - Engineer Officer,
Catering Officer, Physical Education Officer, Legal Officer,
Medical Officer, Dental Officer, Nursing Officer and Chaplain
require more specialist qualifications. You may apply a few months before you achieve the educational requirements. The minimum requirement for NCO aircrew is 3 GCSE/SCE passes (Grade C/3), including English Language and Maths. An elementary knowledge of science, in some cases physics, is also required.

    RAF - good!!

You should go for it. Im not in the RAF myself but my sister and boyfriend both are + they absolutly love it. I get to see the social life of it and its brilliant. To be honest its just like a holiday camp most of the time, v cheap drinks and lots of good friends!!

People who i have spoken to really enjoy there jobs too + there are so many to chose from and so many places to go to around the world as well (none of them ever seem to be bored!) Only down side is you might have to go to war!! And not so brilliant places like Iraq!! Where my BF is at moment, but its such a great experience for him.

You'd be mad not to try, and if you don't at least have a go you'll never know what you could possibly be missing?

Hope its help you a bit?

Good luck in whatever you chose to do though!
