Tonsils

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Ok for ages my tonsils have played me up-3 years, but my doctor keeps saying its either a bout of tonsilitus or tonsil cysts. I can't have my tonsils out as I had a cleft palate as a baby so my mouth structure is sorta weak.

It bugs me though as my tonsils seem to ooze( excuse the word!) white bits everyday recently especially when I'm ill or stressed. I've tried using various bio yoghurts, mouthwash and even scarping my tongue with some medieval tirture style implement to no avail.

Anyone have any idea or had this? Think I should speak to another doctor?

Glad I'm not the only one to get white bits oozing out of the back of my throat! Thought I was some sort of freak! My doc gave me antibiotics for it, said it was a really severe case of tonsilitis. Not sure what to do if you can't have your tonsils removed. The bio yoghurt is a good move. Do you take vitamin c supplements? I started taking them about 5 months ago, and haven't had a thoat infection recently. And I always use strepsil throat spray as soon as I get a hint of a sore throat now, that seems to work quite well.

I get that white stuff too sometimes. Ugh. Throats are weird.

Vitamin C is a good move, it helps me. It could be stress-related (as so many things are) - are you doing exams soon?

i was watching a programme recently and they were talking about taking vitamin C suppliments, which are fine if you dont have vitamin C in your diet but if you have too much vit C it has an adverse affect.

drinking 250mls of OJ a day (as i think i remember) provides you with enough vitamin C for that day

and if youre a junk food addict a packet of crisps has as much vitamin C as an apple....

    suppliments arent always good.

edited cus i still dont know how to spell!!!!

I don't have enough vit C so I will try that and the throat spray. Ta!

Yeh-since xmas I've had something exam or assignment related every week so I'm gonna wait til uni finishes and see if anything improves! It's weird how stress effects ppl in different ways-my friends spots flare up really badly and then my other mate can't eat (not in an eating disorder way tho)

If it's your GP saying this them press him to see an ENT Consultant at your local hospital. Get specialist advice, they may be able to do more than you GP is aware of...

Yeh, I think I will see if I can see a consultant. I'm gonna give the whole thing a break until after my exams and see if its all the stress but then I will pursue it, afterall we have a free NHS why don't i make use of it!?

Also, when you get the first twinges of tonsilitis coming on, gargle with freshly squeezed lemon juice three or four times a day. It's an alternative therapy and the high content of citric and ascorbic acids help to clear the pain and symptoms. It tastes bitch-ugly but it works for me ...

Getting white bits in your mouth could be due to a pharyngeal pouch where a "pouch" occurs at the back of your throat. Food debris etc collects there, turns a bit rancid and congeals into those white lumps. It sounds "eeew" but it's quite common so it may be worth asking for a doctor's opinion and have it looked at.

Hmm, that really does sound like what I'm getting as half the time i don't get the symptoms of tonsilitis, i shall indeed ask the doc!

Tho so far the vit c has worked! Wahey!

All I can tell you guys is that for the first 7 years of my life I was always really sick and hardly ever went to school.

    The cause was my tonsils.

We saw an NHS Consultant (who is also a surgeon)

And he said "I don't recommned this boy has his tonsils out".

So my parents went ahead anyway and did it privately cos the NHS guy said no and guess what - the day of the operation it was the same damn doctor that said no on the NHS that did it on the Private.

So go see a specialist and in fact see 2 or 3 if possible to get several opinions.

By the way I'm so much better after having then taken out - I was only about 7 so don't remember anything about white stuff!!

As for mouthwashes - which ones do you use? Most mouthwashes for fresh breath are junk, they only mask smells, most are not antibacterials - the only ones I know are are listerine, one Tesco make which is very cheap and you could try TCP, it's seriously strong and needs to be diluted with water before gargling.

Also if a mouth wash isn't PH balanced it can rot your teeth if used too much.

I used to use that one thats 2 colours cuz "you can see it working" then I used that Oraldene one but it was really stromg. Now I have a v cheap ownbrand one thats no good. Will go back to oraldene (or however its spelt!) after this i think. Is it pH balanced tho? I'll have to check.

Look in Tesco's at their own Brand, It is PH Balanced above 5.5 and Antiseptic and about £1 or something - works just as well as Listerine for me at a fraction of the price.

gps are shite when it comes to things like this! they just whack u on antibiotics and send u away!
i had really saw throat and white stuff on my tonsils recently. saw a nurse at the local health centre.
he said, mainly due to stress, alcohol, smoking, lack of sleep. basically not looking after urself properly
advised me to take vitamin tablets. have lots of rest and take paracetamol and lozenges for the pain. it worked and its gone now. still keeping up the vits tho helps ur immune system!
