Government's next evolution.

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Will governments in the future be bigger or smaller?

Will all governments be more socialistic?

Will the world be grouped as wealthy areas and huge ghettos spanning much of the southern hemisphere?

Will the southern hemisphere's ecology degrade as the nothern's improves?

Will governments be more heavily armed against radical groups armed with more devasting bombs, or will the world be less armed and peaceful with a greater distribution of wealth?

I think that as always there will be massive variation. The recent trend has been towards smaller government and I can't see that changing in the long-run.

As it stands i don't hold much hope for the 'South' catching up with the riches of the 'North'. If there were to be a change in attitude by govts and world organisations then maybe we could help to pull the 'south' out of poverty, I hope this happens soon.

I think you are right about the environment, the North can increasingly afford to improve its own as mfg leaves for other areas (though not enough) whilst Southern govts feel they would have to sacrifice economic development for protercting their environ, mnet. The two issues are closely linked and a global solution is required.

There seems to be a trend towards greater armament but not a re-armament to anything like Cold War levels

A lot of very polluting manufacturing companies have left the US for places like Mexico and even the Carribean where the pollution laws are weak or non-existance.

Yes this has happened but the less-developed nations are unwilling to turn away companies that can bring wealth so we in the North get the manufactured goods, remain wealthy with a service based economy but the poor people get the pollution.

That is why a global solution is required........

There's a scary Orwellian future that is being faught by liberals in the US. The US is going to fingerprint and take the picture of everyone entering the country and match it against known terrorists or criminals. I'm o.k. with that but here's the next step in this. The government is going to test combining databases that track what volunteers buy, read, occupations, religion, express including all the emails ever sent, etc. to create the most complete profile of an individual ever created. Right now this is an experiment. If it becomes law for security reasons, to me, you have the basis for an Orwellian society.

You might find this article on how our governments look out for terrorist attacks interesting:

Thanks Aladdin that was interesting. I heard they broke the back of the IRA with those kinds of software. Honestly, I'm glad I'm not able to vote yet. I could argue both sides of the "we're losing our rights" vs "we have to do everything to prevent another 9/11" argument.

The Democrats have become fearless in being accused of being soft on terrorism whenever they stand up for civil liberties and diplomacy.

Also, they're reporting that the "chatter" today is telling Muslims to get out of Boston, New York and other places because an attack is imminent. Of course, the people decipering this chatter are probably Arab Americans working for the CIA. So, it's also been reported that this intercept is being discounted.

I am sure they are scores of 'cyber-terrorists', both professional and amateur pranksters, just sending lots of such traffic to confuse and deceive the authorities.

Frankly I am not one bit happy to anybody checking my calls or emails, and the temptation to send emails pretending to be someone else just to piss off the authorities is very big. Today is fighting against terrorism, tomorrow is knocking at people's doors because they've talked about taking drugs on an email. Screw that!

    checking my calls or emails

My friend and I wrote to the Saudi Arabian embassy after 9/11 to tell them lot's of people still welcome Muslims in America. That email would have made someone's list too.
