im going to manchester uni this sept and i was wondering if anyone could advise me on the 'best' accomodation to go for...

ive be told fallowfield area is the main student area but im not sure which halls to go for in there, and whether to go for catering or self catering...

im a really fussy eater but im scared that if i go to self catering halls, i wont have as much opportunity to meet as many people! im also quite lazy, which would make sociallising quite difficult:D

thanks for any help!!:)

I would recommend doing self-catered if your a fussy eater - also means that you can eat when you want, and if your gonna go out for the evening, you dont have to miss a meal that you've already paid for.

Iam sure lots of people in Manchester will do self-catered and it wont make socialising less difficult even if you are shy. It could make things easier e.g. borrowing things from other people, sharing recipes and cooking meals for one another.

Check out this link as well:

Hope thats been of help, and goodluck whatever you decide.

Hey, dunno if you're the person that emailed me last week.. BUT sorry for not replying, my hotmail account gets filled with shite and I forget..

I was in Hulme Hall (TIME TO PIMP IT), which is closer to the uni itself (manchester that is, not UMIST or Man met) - about a 10 min walk, handy in the mornings, and I was catered, altho the food was a bit crap. Hulme has a great atmosphere (or did my year), about 300-400 people, lots of sports stuff, an on site chapel if you're christianically inclined (altho I am not, don't worry the bible bashers are easily avoidable), a nice bar, rooms were ok, I think they're the nicest in catered halls :) much nicer than Owens Park (altho op is cheaper and much bigger and central in fallowfield..). If you want internet in the room be aware that neither Owens Park or most of Oak House (the other BIG - 1000+ - hall of residence in fallowfield, which is the main student-y area). I live in fallowfield at the mo in a house, pros: close to sainsburys, all my mates around me, plus for laziness nights out are easy if you can't be arsed to trek into city centre and there are some nice bars (revolution, glass, bruins, sofa) and 2 cheesy clubs (robinskis and Queen of Hearts - awful music but good fun and packed out on the weekends and pretty busy weeknights. Pulling - go here). And of course the infamous OwensPark Bop is on fridays in OP's bar and dancefloor upstairs. The student meatmarket of choice. ;)
oh, the cons: fallowfield is covered in shite (kebab wrappers, general rubbish) and gets targetted for buglary (this is only really a concern when you're living out of halls tho to be honest as long as you're sensible in halls). Wandering the back streets on a dark night on your own is slightly dangerous too but be sensible and you'll be fine.
The other thing about fallowfield is you're gonna have to either walk to uni (30-40 mins) or more likely get a bus, they're v cheap (you can get an unlimited travel pass for 3-4 quid, these are valid for a week and are handy for uni and getting back from a night out, as the buses in south manc run till 3 or 4 am). If you can't be arsed with buses and want to roll out of bed, go for hulme hall or whitworth park (self catered, very cheap but a bit shit to be honest. plus no internet, but does have "unique" atmosphere and bizarre architecture).

Other halls: Dalton Ellis - I would avoid this one, no bar, a bit lame if I'm honest.
St Anselms - avoid, single sex (male) (sorry if you take offence at this but my honest advice)
There's a single sex girls hall I forget the name of... see "st anselms" :)
UMIST halls - avoid, from all the stuff I've heard from many people who've had crappy experiences in them - too many nerds and weirdos.

So yeah. Manchester is awesome, I am bored out of my skull waiting to get back up there, good luck with accomodation!

just re read your post. You're a fussy eater? GO SELF CATERING!!!!!!! Because the food at all catered places is going to be a bit shit. Downside of self catering : less "community spirit", altho you'll be in flats of 8 or so, but not the same as blocks in catered halls or so I have observed...

Self-catering is good because you can, for instance, choose precisely when you wish to eat depending on when you are hungry, and you can decide exactly what you wish to eat depending on what you fancy and your money. In contrast, the catered option might be good because you will always get a hearty and wholesome meal several times a day, and you might have that community aspect. However, what happens if you miss a meal for whatever reason? Do you go hungry or spend more money buying something from elsewhere, thus wasting what you paid to be catered?

You should not decide which option is best based merely on the community aspect, for this is present - in varying degrees - in both options. Indeed, it could be argued that the community spirt in halls is far more appealing and enjoyable than in a restaurant due to close friendships that generally develop. Instead, money, whether or not you wish to cook for yourself and flexibility should be prime considerations.

    hi Doormat!
yeah it was me who emailed you!
after much consideration i think im going to stick with the accomodation in Fallowfield, which seems to be the most studenty!

im going to go for oak house(self catering) as my 1st choice (you said it doesnt have internet in each room but the prospectus & web page says it does:confused: ) second choice: allen hall, and 3rd: woolton hall. (both catering... all the other self catering in fallowfield are en suite which are too expensive:( )

what do you think/have heard of about allen hall and woolton hall? thanks for any feedback! :)

    Hey Doormat, what you studying?

Clara, whatever you do don't apply for the all girls hall-St. Gabriels!
If you are a fussy eater (like me), go for self catering. If you're on a budget go for Oak House (fallowfield) or whitworth park (on campus).
Don't go for umist halls cos their shite but don't go for any of the best halls cos you'll end up without accommodation when you get here (like i did).

im slightly confussed, which exactly are the umist accomodation?
i thought fallowfield was the main 'studenty' place and the campus was the umist part... oh its all so confussing:confused:

Campus in the above posts = Manchester University Campus.

    not UMIST.

UMIST campus has all the UMIST halls directly on campus, and is far closer to the city centre... getting there from fallowfield = bus to BBC (40 mins), then 10 min walk to campus

St gabs was opposite my hall last year! Strange girls in there. But hey, if you want single sex, go for it.

    I do Law. Its hard.
