Whats the deal with moving into halls? Just wondered who im likely to be living with?
Same sex, people with similar interests, people on similar courses, do "gap yearers" get put together?
I know each uni will be different and i can find out more from them, but just wondered what peoples general experiences were.

i stayed in self-catering en suite halls. i had a small room (but plenty big enough for all my junk) and a shower room (with the best shower in the world and a heated towel rail, boy i miss my halls). I shared a kitchen with 4 other people and these people were mixed sex (2 girls 3 boys altogether). I loved living in healls in my first year. You meet so many people you wouldn't have otherwise met (i.e. people from different courses - who can be handy to know when you get pissed off with your classmates). I also had my bed linen washed, my room cleaned once a week, and could get up at 9am for a 9:15 lecture as lived right opposite the school of languages.
basically, didn't realise what luxury i was living in till i moved out!
in fact the only bad thing i can say about halls are the fire alarms :rolleyes:
The facilities were pretty basic – we had one kitchen, one toilet, one shower room and one bathroom between about 8. One thing you have to watch is people stealing food – soundspetty but it can be a real probalem,especially as anyone can walk along the corridor and take stuff. Lots of kitchens ended up buying locks to put on their fridges. If the halls are catered (as mine was) the kitchen facilities will probably be really basic: we had microwave, kettle, toaster and fridge.
The atmosphere is really great though and there's no way I would have opted out of living there. I made my best friends at uni through living in halls. I even moved back in the 3rd year! Agree about 5am fire alarms though, usually set off by drunken students coming back from the union...
I hated it, not everyone loves it! It was so noisy and I'm a person who liked to have my own space.
You do get to meet a lot of people and have the potential for a good social life just because people are *there* and invite you out on the spur of the moment.
Probably okay for the first doss year, bit pointless after that.
But halls are a great place to meet people, I probably have met about 50 people, and their all pretty ok, some more so than others so. And don't buy all the stuff like kettles and stuff. maybe take pans and plates but wait to see what other people take before you go rushing out to buy a new one.
I'm currently in quite a small hall with a bar(just over 100 people) and split into flats with about 10 per flat. I have my own shower room and everything is included, plus some nice old ladies clean the rooms and living room. As for meeting people, i t can be really good but I haven't made any 'good' friends from my hall, partly because I do lots of activities and heave made friends through those instead. I've applied to stay another year as it's quite peaceful and convenient.
As for grouping people I think you can state whether you want to be in a mixed hall/flat but apart from that it's pretty random. In my flat, there's a mix of years and subjects.
Which unis are you considering lennon?
Ill just add that ive been looking at private student halls for the moment. Obviously these are a couple of quid more expensive per week but more "luxury"! I dont know whether i could cope with having to share a bathroom with more than 3 or 4 other people, so im demanding en-suite!
Positive replies so far, seems to be the vast majority of people have good things to say about Halls.
Well, my experiences of halls are quite mixed. When I went to Uni for the first time I moved into the biggest shithole I've ever seen. However, myself and my room-mate did have the biggest room you could imagine. The kitchens were shit but then the showers were absolutely amazing ..... although sharing 2 between 15 girls was a tad difficult at times. We started out with about 39 people in the halls and ended up with 11 at the end of the year. Those of us that survived remained friends throughout our entire four years.
After taking a year out after third year I moved back into the most expensive halls on offer. Double bed, en suite, computer in room with internet access, private telephone ..... need I go on. I did share a kitchen with 9 other girls though but we all got on alright. Most of us were final year students of postgrads and so we didn't really do the whole party thing but then that's probably why they put us all together.
Personally I would say that halls are definitely the best thing to do in first year. It basically forces you to make friends which can never be a bad thing!!

And sharing a bathroom isnt that bad - most rooms will have their own washbasin at least though.
(Oh and go for Leeds Met - Leeds is a great city
