Should Turkey be allowed to join the EU?

They arent really a European nation, does that matter?

They have a very poor record on human rights, would it best to keep them out until they clean up or bring them in and make them clean up by introducing EU law, would this work?

Also to be considered is the poor state of the Turkish economy and its role as a strategic partner, especially with regards to Iraq..............

They should not be allowed until they sort out their human rights record and treatment of the Kurds. Their economic situation does not help either, but improvements on both counts could be implemented fairly quickly, and if they wanted they could reverse the current reservations of the international community in 3-4 years.

hmm, tough choice as Turkey is technically in Asia. There are fears that if Turkey is allowed in African countries will follow.

Actually Whowhere, Turkey is in Eurasia with a portion of the country technically part of the European continent.

That aside, I suspect that current EU reservations to advance the membership framework process are only exacerbated by the election of an Islamist government.

The EU has traditionally been representative of western and central European "christian" countries which undoubtedly would take a dim view of a full blown Islamic country in their midst (certainly in light of the tense feelings of most EU citizens concerning the current level of Muslim immigrants in various member states).

Well that actually could work in Turkey's favour. It might all be propaganda, but remember how often we are reminded that Turkey is the only Muslim member of NATO, and how important a role the country can play as a mediator between NATO forces and the Muslim world.
