I used to love going and getting a sticker for being brave, but last time i went and had to get a filling, although my tooth was nummbed, the sound of the drill hitting my tooth was to hard to bare! Ive been so scared to go i havent been for about a year, i know one of my teeth are needing a filling replaced but im petrified to go! How do i overcome my fear? Be brave?!

You are not alone. I've been scared of the dentist since I was about 7. I had a milk tooth that instead of wobbling & falling out, decided to travel back up into my gum. So I went to the dentist but didn't get my usual woman. Instead I had this man who had scratch marks on his chair & didn't tell me what he was going to do. Before I knew it he'd injected my gum & yanked the thing out.

Since then, I've had a zillion baby teeth AND adult teeth removed. Braces to widen my mouth, train tracks to straighten my teeth. And I've got a wisdom tooth that's growing horizontally.

And you're scared 'cause of a filling? Pah!

    :p

There are several dentists that specialise in treating nervous patients. You could ring around to find one of them.

I wasn't scared of the dentist until about two years ago!
Weird really because I never had anything done but then I got a tooth that was growing in crooked behind the baby tooth and the dentist said she would have to remove the baby tooth if it didn't fall out. Three years later and its still there, with the adult tooth behind it. And I won't go back because I'm scared....!!

I'm not scared of the dentist, but i AM putting off going - i have malformed enamel on my teeth, which has just been discovered because of the fact that i need more than 7 fillings, i don't know how many, my sister asked and he started counting... he got up to seven, and i was like, i don't want to know! They're gonna have to sedate me too :( I'm kinda scared of that actually. Oh well. has to be done, i'll get toothache otherwise.

I was actually meaning to post a thread like this sometime.....

I'm really scared of going to the dentist - i haven't been for about 5 years. It's a vicious circle though: i don't go, because I'm scared he'll give me braces, but the longer I leave it without going, the more chance there is that I'll need them!

Seriously though, I will need my teeth straightening at some point - I don't want permanent braces, but would be willing to wear ones at night - would this be enough?

I was petrified of going to the dentists until I found a really nice lady dentist. When I 1st saw her I told her I was petrified anyhow she told me exactly what she was doing and if I wanted her to stop just to raise my arm. She told me I needed two teeth out , she knew I didnt want to be awake and I didnt want gas so she told me about a treatment which is basically giving me a needle in my arm, what did to me was made me feel sleepy, I wasnt bothered what she was doing, I didnt even know wether she was taking teeth out or not, I was totally relaxed and felt no pain, I just wasnt bothered.

I dont know what it was called, or even wether all dentists use this but from my experience it was fantastic and if ever I need teeth out again I will have it this way. So anyone needing teeth out it may be worth asking about it:D

If you can find a sympathetic dentist like I did, explain to them how frightened you are it does help a lot.

My front teeth are a bit trashed now because i have avoided the denist for about 2-3 years and have had to have more injections and work done on them than if i went at the start, go to the dentist all of u otherwise u will regret it :)

No. You'll need tracks to straighten them out I'm afraid.
But trust me, it is worth it in the end.

Oh, finally. Somebody the same as me! I have the enamel thing too, I've always cleaned my teeth twice a day, sometimes more, but I've got...8 fillings I think. Its not my fault either, I hate my teeth.

I used to be scared of the dentist. I've had lots of teeth out because my mouth was too small for them and I've had three braces...I go to a nice woman dentist now though who's really nice so its not quite as bad.
