WTF is a bench fee?

Apparently all students at my uni have to pay a £100 bench fee, payable by cheque this Friday. Nothing has been mentioned or explained about this, other than a small note on the bottom of my enrolment information. I can't afford to pay this, I don't have my loan yet and have to pay full fees, plus my rent next week. I don't understand what a bench fee is, can anyone enlighten me, and do I *have* to pay it? I think it's very unfair, seeing as I already have to pay the full fee!

A bench fee is where you pay £100 in order to have a bench erected in the campus for which you will be everlastingly remembered. It will be engraved with your name and 'Received With Thanks'.

But seriously, mate, I do not have any idea. Why do you not contact your university and ask them precisely what the "bench fee" constitutes?
