Michael Schumacher has won the F1 Driver Championship for the fifth time. This 5th title is the earliest into a season that any driver has ever won the title - completing it in 140 days from the start of the season. The fifth title equals the achievement of the great Fangio, aregueably the greatest driver ever. F1 is more competitve now then in those days and so Schuey has a good claim to be the best driver ever.

Personally I think had it not been for his untimely death Aryton Senna would've gone on to achieve this but fair play to him anyway. Schuey has not always had the best car either as Fangio leapt from best car to best car. There is no doubting that the Ferrari is the best car now and last year but before that Williams and McClaren were the quickest.

He's German, took Damon off the road and ruined a few British dreams but you can't help but appreciate what this man has achieved.

You've got to hand it to him, he's certainly the best driver around at the monent and possibly the greatest ever.

I've never had much interest in the sport but the guy deserves credit, he's undoubtably the best in the business right now and possibly in the history in f1

I was amused the other day when I saw a story by someone who said that sport shouldn't have people that dominate because if someone wins everything or most things others will lose heart and competition would become non existent.

I have a mate who works for F1, travelling the world with them and working with the drivers.

The thing that really depresses me is that he says Schuey is a really nice guy too. He once found out that one of our friends was a fan and that it was his birthday, so he took off his cap, signed it and gave it to my F1 mate. I know it's not a big deal, but it was to our friend and he didn't have to do it.

So he is supremely talented, gets paid a fortune to drive for the best F1 team ever and he's a nice guy. Depressing, isn't it?

He might be a nice guy to fans MoK, but he has found himself in the middle of cheating incidents all too often.
Back in his days with Benetton the F1 authorities conducted several investigations (and if memory serves fined Benetton at least one for breach of regulations) involving illegal car modifications and the illicit use of advance traction systems. More recently he's been accused of forcing out of the track and / or obstructing other racers in many occasions- most notably to Damon Hill. And then there was the disgraceful incident recently when his team-mate pulled aside to let him overtake and win. Whilst Shcu might have not been involved with the car tampering or team tactics, he surely was fully aware of them and should have put a stop to such tactics.

Having said that, he is still a superb driver- the best one in the world, and probably one of the 3 greatest of all time.

He works for F1, not a team. Does a lot of the set up in the week before the GP, then on the day often found working with the TV companies, escorting cameramen etc.

Alladin, I am an enthusiastic irish F1 fan, and as such, strongly opinionated, and im sick and tired of the whinging and bitchin about the Hill/Scheuy incident.

What are you talkin about. Its a competitive sport. And all sports people want one thing. To win! At all cost, it happens in all sports. If you can get away with breaking the rules then you do.

Do you remember "The Hand of God" in footy, well its the same thing, we never hear the end of it. And Scheuy isnt the only one who has broken the rules. Prost enjoyed bumping into people on occasion. All the F1 teams have broken the rules in one form or another. Jaguars illegal fuel a few races ago. There have been multiple rule infringements by British teams and drivers (& everyone else).

The point is that when Britain breaks the rules and gets away with it, yous Brits are delighted(footy...the ball didnt cross the line after it hit the woodwork) . But if anyone else does it and a Brit loses out, then all those infringements are quickly forgotten and its sour grapes all round.

My point is, you win some, you lose some, but you keep trying and stop whinging !!!

Ego, you make a good point!

The man one 2 Championships, then went 3 years in a row just missing out on his 3rd(twice in the last race), even though he did not have as competitive a car as Williams or McLaren. He earnt this prestige and honour. And I for one am very happy for him after watching his struggle.

Well I ain't British so I can assure you I speak about the incident from a neutral position.

I was pointing out that (before the man is elevated to sainthood status) he's had more than his fair share of incidents- Hill's was just one of them. People would speak of Maradona in the same way- most would agree that he's one of the all-time greatest, but only the fanatical would fail to mention his darker side.

Just because Schu is the best driver in the world doesn't mean he should be free of criticism for such behaviour.
