My sister has been diagnosed with severe depression for years now, and with medication is now able to cope.
I'm really worried that depression is hereditary though.
Since my ex left me at the end of last year, i've found it really difficult to recover 100%. I feel like my confidence has been knocked so much. I'm scared that i'm 'depressed.'
I mean - how do you know if you're depressed and need to see a doctor?
Is it normal to feel 'a bit down' for so many months?
Any comments would be appreciated.

Depression is not necessarily hereditary, and we have some factsheets about it here:

But really you should write down whatever feelings and symptoms you have, and speak to your doctor about it.
