Brian Paddick, the Brixton police chief who masterminded the Met's "softly, softly" approach to cannabis possession, is to be cleared of criminal allegations over his own use of the drug.

An investigation by Humberside police into claims that he allowed cannabis to be smoked in his home and that he also used the drug, is expected to conclude there is no evidence to support the allegations.

However, despite the findings which are expected to be released within the next few weeks, it is highly unlikely that Mr Paddick will be returned to his position in charge of policing Lambeth.

The £93,000-a-year commander was moved to a desk job pending the outcome of the inquiry but his return is believed to be opposed by some senior Yard officers.

The police investigation centred on claims made by Mr Paddick's former lover James Renolleau. Mr Paddick has always denied the accusations.

Mr Paddick is said to argue that he and Mr Renolleau shared living costs so technically, if cannabis was smoked in the flat they shared, the home was not under his "complete control".

Mr Paddick also faces a claim that he had a relationship with Mr

Renolleau while the latter was on police bail, but did not tell his superiors at Scotland Yard.

This is against Yard regulations though any breach is said to be minor and the officer might be given "words of advice" - particularly as officers are not obliged to reveal such a liaison if the person in question is a relative or a close friend.

Both Mr Paddick and Mr Renolleau have been interviewed by the police investigation team and the report is expected to be delivered to the Metropolitan Police Authority in the next few weeks.

Well thats good news then, I doubt it will change the situation much though.
To be honest the tabloids have too much say over policy in the government for us to have a realistic drug debate.
