Is in person socialising the same as online socialising?

This is a discussion my partner and I have had recently...does socialising online feel the same to you as socialising in person?

For example, if you didn’t want to socialise with real people or felt anxious about it, would you still socialise online? If you’d had enough of real people for the day, for example, would you also have had enough of messaging people online for that day?

Hmm this is an interesting topic @independent_! I would have to say that for me, if I am in a mood where I don't feel like socialising, I won't socialise online or in person. But I also think it depends on the reason why I didn't want to socialise, say if it was because I was feeling anxious, I would probably socialise online rather than in person and if I was craving face-to-face contact then I would socialise in person etc.

I also think there is a difference between these two types of socialisation. I think online you can create your own kinda of persona which give your more confidence and the fact that you are protected by a screen can be quite comforting. But in real life I think sometimes people are more of their true self and if you're not happy with yourself e.g. you have low self-esteem etc. then online socialisation would probably be the go to. These are just my thoughts anyway!

    No two different things.
Feel completely different for everyone I think

I’ve ever thought this ever since I read an article on here about how online is good but everyone need In person connection. Ever since I read that I felt a bit shit because I mostly speak online

And sometimes when I don’t want to socialise in real life I don’t online either. Unless it is seeking support lol. I think if your social Battery has gone it’s gone. Guess depends on your mood though
“And when they look at you, they won't see everything you've been through. They won't see the **** that turned to scars that began to fade with time. They won't see the heartbreaking things that shook up and changed your entire world. They won't know how many tears you cried or even what it was you were crying about. They won't see how strong you had to be because you had no other choice. What they will see though is how compassionate you are because you experienced pain. What they will see is how kind you are because you experienced how cruel the world is. What they will see is how good you are because you've seen how bad things or people can be. The difference between you and your experiences are who you choose to be, despite everything that could have turned you cold and unkind. You are the good the world needs and the best of us.” ~ Kirsten Corley

That's really interesting @Eleanor and @Shaunie and I too think they are 2 very different things.

I think sometimes having that version of myself online that I've got total control over is what makes me feel that sometimes even when I'm done with face to face socialising, I can still socialise online. I have the security of being able to log off at any time, I'm hidden behind the screen and I don't actually have to speak lol.
