Revenge Porn: Your Questions

edited August 2020 in Sex & Relationships
At the end of August, there's a new TV series premiering on NOW TV called I Hate Suzie written by Lucy Prebble. The main character, Suzie (played by Billie Piper - where are my Whovians?!) has her life turned upside down when her online accounts are hacked and a sexual photo of her is leaked. The series follows the impact this has on every aspect of Suzie’s life, including the emotional stages of shock, denial, fear, shame, guilt, anger and acceptance.

As part of the promotion for I Hate Suzie, Lucy is doing a filmed interview for social media where she'll be answering questions on the themes of the show - revenge porn, the impact of it (e.g. on relationships or mental health), etc. Excitingly, you folks have the chance to submit those questions!

If there's something you'd like to ask Lucy about revenge porn, either reply to this post or drop us a PM if you're more comfortable submitting that way. The deadline for questions is the 26th (this coming Wednesday), and your questions will be asked anonymously during the interview.

Once the interview has been published online, we'll let you all know so you can get the answers to your questions. We're expecting this to be shortly after the deadline on the 26th.

If you have any questions about this or how it works, feel free to post them below as well. :)

Just to bump this and say, the questions don't have to be specific to revenge porn necessarily, so do have a think about some of the overlapping issues around this in terms of the impact that this might have, for example on mental health through being exposed/bullied online. You don't necessarily need to have experience of any of this to ask a question :3

Interested to hear what you all think, either on the thread or through PM :+1:

Hi! I think a helpful question for people to know in general is:

If you believe you may be a victim of revenge porn, what are the first steps you should take?

This is a great question, thanks Coc0mac :)

If anyone has any questions, keep them coming!  If you don't feel comfortable asking in the thread itself, feel free to PM @The Mix

A few questions I've thought of...

    1. What exactly is revenge porn, what 'counts'?
    2. Is it a criminal offence, if so what consequences are there!
    3. What are the reasons people do it?
    4. Is it more common for young people to do it?
    5. How can you keep yourself safe from this?

What would you say is the least understood but most common mental health effect of revenge porn or the exposure of having photos or videos of you online?

What was your main inspiration for writing I Hate Suzie? I was wondering about what your favourite part has been about doing this.
