Proposing in front of loads of strangers

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Why do many people propose marriage in front of a huge number of strangers? Restaurants and sports stadiums are among the popular locations for public proposals. Why do they feel the need to have a large audience of strangers for what's usually a private thing?

The presence of a large number of strangers puts pressure on the proposee. If she doesn't accept, she will look bad and he will feel humiliated.

    Hey Robrert,

Having not been proposed to, I can only speculate, but perhaps it's because a proposal is thought to be a really big deal and thus they try to make a really big event out of it so it will be memorable to the couple. Or it could just be that places one might want to propose because it's seen as romantic (a fancy restaurant) is naturally filled with other people. So it's not that they want a big public thing, but they want to do it in a romantic setting and you naturally have other people in that romantic restaurants-- although that reasoning doesn't work as well for sports event.

Maybe other people will have some other ideas about this?
