Hi all,
I'm just about to book a week's break in Amsterdam in August. But I was wondering, is there much a darkside to the friendly city?
My mum swears there's people there who we'll (four 16 males and one 18 year old male.) be easy prey too...embarrasingly typical I know, but I thought i'd check it out. So thoughts anyone...

Apart from that, believe me, you are safe, and if you are looking for fun, you will find it in this town.
Just another important thing. I do not know the exact statistic, but a huge percentage of tourists that come to Amsterdam, go back to their countries without the wallet that they originally broght!!! Pick pockets are everywhere, and their skills are very well developed, believe me
Enjoooooooooooyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!

And be warned, it's not cheap! I made this mistake the first time thinking it would be French/Spanish prices but a pint is usually more expensive than an English pint.
I don't reccomend the cannabis cafes in town (ie. the ones nearest Central Station) - they're tacky, touristy expensive and have grotty cheap interiors liek plastic chairs etc and usually have no toilets....very annoying.
If you walk a little further from the centre you will find some nicer ones which have nicer interiors, often better music (rather than all the hippy crap some play), a toilet and most serve alcohol, but only beer. You can often sit on the street overlooking the canals in these ons too. Sorry, I can't remember any cafe names!
Where are you staying in Amsterdam? I know some of the youth hostels and cheaper hotels. The youth hostels in town are always cramped and loud so be prepared for no sleep! Whenever I go there now I usually stay in a budget hotel a little further out of town as you get a nicer bed and no-one throwing up right on your shoes next to your bed.
Anyway have fun and be safe
At night there is some dodgy goings on but compared to some places its heaven! Pick pocketers are common...just make sure you have your things where you can see them and dont put important stuff (money, phones etc!) in back pockets!
Enjoy your stay!
