I know this should go in the student section but often it takes ages to get a reply because not many people go there.
Basically Im completely confused about something which i should know so dont mock me.

Im goin to uni in sept, and my form which has to be sent ot my local authority with like how much my parents earn has been sent off. Im confused though with all the terms. Therefore, what is this actual form, is it how much my parents will have to pay for me to go, because i doubt they'll have to pay anything because we have a really low income, or is it how much money i will get given to me.

Also, where does the student loan fit into al of this? <IMG SRC="wink.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">

ok the forms are to establish how much ur parents earn. Then ur LEA will use this to work out a percentage of ur loan. There is a set amount for each student no matter what ur parents earn ( this is different for each part of the country), then there is a part called income based. this means that if ur parents earn buckets of money the government expect them to give u some towards living costs.
The other reason for the form is to assess if u need to pay fees. If ur parents earn under 20,000 ( as mine do) then u will have no fees to pay. Then it varies up to the top band of over 40,000 where they pay the full 1100 tuition fees.
I hope that covers everything. I know the forms are a nightmare as i had to fill them out last year then again last week 4 my second year.
    Anymore probs just ring ur LEA or u can message me although i'm no expert. <IMG SRC="smile.gif" border="0" ALT="icon"> <IMG SRC="smile.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">

For a start, hotphoenix, where are you at uni?

    Leese.

What happens is that you have to pay tuition fees to the university. The figure is about £1100, for this academic year, I think. Your parents income is tested to see how much, if any of that, you have to pay. You will be then told by the LEA.

The loan is separate. It is also means tested, to see how much you can get. This will be told to you separately.

    Hope that helped.

Your local award authority handles the first stage of your loan application. Regardless of where you are studying, if you are from England and Wales you will apply to your Local Education Authority. If you are from Scotland you will apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland and if you are from Northern Ireland your loan application should be made to your Education and Library Board.

Contact your LEA and ask them to send you the application forms and booklets about funding/ finances for higher education.

As living in the Isle of Man - If your parents earn over £32,000, Government gives no grant and if they earn under that, depending how much - the Government pay course fees and give you grant for living costs and spends. If you quit the course or fail, you pay the Government part of the grant back and if you pass, then you don't pay them back.

Sympathies for people in England having to get into debt...

i know what you mean about all the forms but just thank god that you don't have all the forms i have, as not only do i have to fill in the LEA forms but also the NHS and my scholarship forms oh and if you didn't already know these have to be filled in every year. so just as your sitting your exams and stressed out as it is this nice little pile of papers appears on the door mat with a clunk. if you get stuck with what everything is all about just ring your local LEA with your questions the number should be in your local phone book, they should put your mind at ease.

I'm new to these board so Hi Everyone

    /me waves

Just checking, I'm taking a gap year from this september, so I don't need to fill out tuition fee forms right? But I will need to do them next summer, just before I go to university, as far as I can tell. If someone can confirm this or otherwise I'd be greatful.

    Thanks folks

i cant say for definite, but my friend is on her gap year and has gone to New Zealand (she will be starting uni in sept) and i think her mum is filling out her forms, so basically you can leave it to next year. But you should really start about March time becuse its a lot of paperwork

Ortang, they give the initial forms out in schools usually, so its really important that in about feb next year you, or your parents or something, contact your LEA to request an HE1 form...thats the initial form you need.

Don't wait to be contacted!! my boyfriend went to france on his gap year this year, and if it wasn't for me being a yr younger and therefore @ school, he would have had no idea that he shoulda been filling in the forms!

    :p

Thanks leese, furry_friend, that's really helpful just to clear it up. I'm taking my gap year in this country, so there won't be any problems with me filling out forms next year. And now I can look forward to a year developing radar and electronic intelligence equipment :D
