I was reactivating an old MSN account and now, when you sign up you have a choice of a free 2MB account or one you pay for.
There is a huge 'click here for billing information' button if you want to pay, but the free account sign up section is in tiny font hidden away at the bottom. If I hadn't scrolled down I might not have seen it, it really is that small!
Plus, you now have to pick your secret question from a list. However, they are all really obvious answers, and anyone who even vaguely knows you could know the answer to your secret question. It is stupid!

Oddly, MSN seem to want to charge people for using the service they run on servers that cost them about 50 million dollars, and bandwidth that costs about the same each year. Weird huh? <IMG SRC="smile.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">
Seriously though - there's nothing free. The free hotmail accounts were just to promote MSN in the old days and get lots of information about everyone - how often they check their mail, how old they are and where they are, how long they've been online, how many mails they send and how many online friends they have. etc etc.
Then of course they also send you 'promotional offers' which they charge other companies to advertise on... But all that still isn't making enough money so now they are reducing what you get for free to try and entice you to pay cash as well as sell your privacy.
As the saying goes, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Hotmail is actually a very expensive snack indeed when you consider just how much of your privacy you have to swap for it.

Yeah, most of the time.
For techie people, though, there is some good free software that *can* be better than stuff you pay for. Linux, Apache, PHP etc.
Porn *of* Microsoft? that's just sick
Microsoft have been evil for a long time...
thing is i keep all my emails from a certain someone and its annoying me that hotmail send me shit threatening to delete them if i dont do something.
obviously they know i dont want to delete them (if i did i would have done) so thats one thing they know about me...I want to keep those emails of sentimental value to me. So naturally (as most people would) they offer to let me keep them and get more space etc for a payment of 20 quid.
They really dont know me that good do they
