Jamie Carragher and football related violence

edited January 2023 in General Chat
On Sunday Jamie Carragher was hit by a coin thrown from a crowd, he promptly threw it back and was sent off as a result.

A few years ago Eric Cantona attacked a 'supporter' and was banned from playing football for eight months.

Should Jamie now be banned in a similar manner?

I feel sorry for the bloke. I'd probably have done the same. Although I accept that it was a foolish and potentially dangerous thing to have done with the benefit on hindsight. But there aren't many other professions where rivals throw metal objects at you.

I'm thinking John Prescott here. He should get a slap on the wrist, that's it.

On the one hand, the coin he threw could of hit a child and was a silly thing to do.

On the other hand, the coin hit him and he appeared evidently angry. It was a split second responce to retaliate.

I say, he deserved to be fined and sent off, as a professional he will recieve abuse. Playing for Liverpool, he also deserves regular instalments of pain. However, I would suggest that a serious match ban would be uncalled for.

Don't follow the footie much but I heard about it. I would give him a one or two match ban, as it is still a fairly serious offense even though he was provoked, nothing too harsh though.

Defiantly not. Although Jamie's and Cantana's incidents were both split second decisions. The incident involving Cantana was far far worse.

Carragher has, at least, apoligised for his actions and not bollock on about seaguls and trawlers.

The only person that should be banned is the person that threw the coin. Carragher will probably end up with a fine. Which I think is about right.

How so? Cantona attacked the person abusing him. Carragher threw the coin into a crowd. It could have hit anyone - as somone else said, even a child...

The seagulls quote happened after his court appearance. He did apologise for his actions. Also worth noting was that Manchester United banned him themselves before the FA acted. Liverpool have done sweet FA.

What message does that send the coin throwers?

Oops!, shows how much I know!

I just feel the Carragher is a lesser incident to that of the Cantana one. True the coin could have hit anyone, but thankfully it didn't.

More concerning though is the number of incidents in recent weeks involving objects being thrown at players and officals from the crowd.

*Pies at the linesman at a Millwall match.
*Bottles in the Chelsea V Spurs Lge Cup match.

As i said before, a simple fine should suffice.

About fucking time. Have you noticed how few there are? I've started a few but when you consider how many blokes there are on thesite, I'm surprised that there aren't more.

Do us a favour though, no 'I hate United' crap. Its boring, and there's more to football than MUFC...

FOOTBALL i love it, morre football threads, there are issues everyday !

Are you a united fan been from kent

As for carragher, i feel sorry for him, but we need to make an example of him, if they let him off, they are in a tricky position next time it happens. Hooliganism never went away, but a trend seems to be starting over which crews can get the most press attention through chucking stuff at players, something must be done before its a snooker ball or something

I hope that doesnt mean girls aren't allowed to have their say as well?!

Anyway you'll get my two pence worth whether you want it or not.

yes i appreciate he was angry lets face it Berkamps (sp) challenge was at him rather than the ball. even though no contact was made, if there had been i think he would have left the ground in an ambulance. so you can see why he might have been a bit peed.
but the ref dealt with that and Berkamp was shown the red card.
he should have been proffesional and walked away when the coin was thrown at him. then liverpool would have been 11 men to arsenals 9 and would probably still be in the FA cup.

I wasn't being sexist - it's just that football is usually a man thing...

ANd yes I do support United. Have done since I was a nipper, and remember that I AM 31. so thta was a time when Liverpool were winning everything - hell I remember the first time they won the European Cup....

At that time all my mates were Scouse scum and I wanted to be different. I never thought in my wildest dreams that United would have become as successful as they have now, or that they would get such a following.

Oh and I go to Old Trafford regularly...

    Oh, the thread...

Jamie Carragher's actions were no better than any hooligan. We would expect that the fan who originally threw the coin to be banned for life. WHy shouldn't Carragher get a 8 month ban like Cantona did?

They are allowed to voice their pathetic ill-educated opinions if it makes them happy, aslong as my tea is still ready when I get home.

Miss P, care to finally break the stigma associated with your gender and explain the offside rule...?

Cases like this piss me off because the media rants on about how much of a digrace and hooligan jamie carragher is BUT what about the dememented chicken that threw the coin at him / the ref? no one thinks about that though because it's easier to to pick on someone in a vulnerable position than some nobody.

    Certainly.

When the team on the attack passes the ball forward there must be two players from the other team in front of the ball. This includes the goalie. So it is normaly the goalie and another player.

If however there is a player from the attacking side that would be considerd as 'off side' but he is not interfering with play then its not off side.

I hope I have now proved my worthyness to join in on this thread.

    No you havent.

when the attacking team pass the ball forward, there must be two players from the defending team infront of the runner (not the ball), yes this does include the goalie. However if the ball is in front of the runner, then there does not need to be any players from the defending team. so you could say for the 'off side' rule the ball counts as two players.

i thinks its f**king disgusting that there is so much hype about carragher throwing the coin that hit him back into the crowd. the injured party has made such a big deal of the fact that he got hit but if carragher had been cut by the coin people would have said 'well theres nothing we can do'

players have to put up with a considerable amount of taunting etc when they are playing - which is expected really but being hit by a coin is, to me, well beyond the line in terms of tolerance. all i can say is i hope that he hit the bloke who threw the coin and that carragher gets off scot free.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
It was about time someone has the balls to do something back if that would have hit someone like beckham he would have hit the deck like a sack of s**t,The difference between Cantona and Carragher is that Carragher retaliated to something actually physical where Cantona just went of some mad French wobbler cos someone gave him abit of verbal which is part of the game getting coins thrown by the ground aint part of the game, verbal abuse is so there the major diffence!!!

What Jamie did was wrong and he has admitted it! whats with the Carragher/Cantona comparisons? they are two totally different insidents! I'm a proud Liverpool Fan and was disgusted at the way the Arsenal fans were behaving!
As carragher was standing so close to both the ref and his assistant the could have been thrown at anyone of the three. Probly the ref more than anyone as he'd just sent of 2 arsenal players!!
It mared a good game of football! But this sort of behaviour is starting to take over at every level. I was playing 5a-side at college and was struck on the hand by a 2p coin, bottles were always beeing thrown on the pitch and the crowd was always abusing everyone! the abusing is part of football its called rivalry but the throwing of bottles and coins is not and needsto STOPPED before iot gets out of hand!
