FOOTBALL TOPIC: Terracing or All-seater??

For those of you that aren't interested in this topic, look away now.

For me I much prefer Terracing. Its so much better. You can decide where you want to watch the game from and the atmosphere is so much better.

I always ponder over what if? What if Hillsbourgh never happened. What if Lord Justice Taylor took a slighty leaner view when it came to terracing. EG instead of making stadiums all-seater. Have 70-80% of the ground seated and rest teracing.

The events of Hillsbrough were tragic, don't get me wrong but it wasn't the terracing that killed the Liverpool supporters. It was the way the terracing was managed by the police and the design. EG Small individual pens.

Anyway I could go on about that but I'm drifting off topic.

Back to my point. Football has lost so much since terracing went. Gone are the famous standing area's such as Liverpools Kop, Man Utd's Stretford End, Man City's Kippax, Notts Forests Trent End, Arsenals North Bank and my Derby's Pop side. All replaced by bland dreary plastic seats.

I've gone too long so its over to you...

totally agree, football lost alot with terracing. I was unfortunate to be at hillsborough that day and i understand the reasons behind the decisions however it is time to review the situation. Terracing attracted a certain fan, a fan seldom found at football now, it was for the working classes, the lads that met in the pub before hand, the humour and the passion. The whole family approach isn't working, saturday - fa cup 4th round ,middlesborough v man u and a half empty ground ?????????? thats just not right, targeting a richer middle class audience has alienated the true fan, the one willing to travel the country on a cold, wet tuesday night. Football needs a different approach and quick or it will self destruct, affordable standing areas would be a massive step back in the right direction.

There are stadiums in Germany that can switch between terracing and seating, which is an interesting thought. EG Dortmands (sp?) ground which hosted last years UEFA Cup final.

It really would be nice to have terracing back, but I its never going to happen.

Eb, what was it like to be there on that day?

I often get asked this, and to be honest my response usually suprises people. Firstly we were already annoyed with liverpool after english clubs were banned from europe from there hysel antics, during that ban we would of qualified four times, finanically that cost us etc etc.............. Secondly it was widely agreed we were going to win that day, clough wanted the fa cup, we'd done em in the league and although we'll never know i believe we would of gone on to wembley. So when a few started spilling onto the pitch early on we were very pissed of 'what a bunch of wankers' was the chant, of course we had no idea of what was about to unfold, the players left the pitch and only then did an a very wierd silence descend at our end of the ground, paramedics everywhere it started to hit home what was happening, we watched for a while, not knowing the extent of it all and then headed for the car generally fed up there was to be no match. It was only when we got in and watched the news we realised what we had just witnessed. Its quite vivid now, but i still recall that silence, all 35,000 people just staring almost day dreaming at this mess of people, police, paramedics, ambulances camped around the goal. I suppose its a good thing we weren't aware of people dying while were watching, that would of made it so much worse, and i think beyong that weekend i am no different to any other football fan in how i feel about all those people, all football fans like ourselves, been crushed to death. Our part was only as opposition on the day, and as fans we were no more effected than most. I think it hit me the most the season after, when we went to anfield they had a special minutes silence, during which our fans went and layed 96 bouquets around the centre circle, when the whistle blew after the silence you expect a big cheer like normal, but there was not a sound, it was weird, people crying etc......... then we sang you'll never walk alone with them, a nice moment !

Of course they beat us in the re-match, as you would expect and life went on !

    Terraces, everytime.

It really was a kneejerk reaction to Hillsborough and didn't adress the real probelm - the Police. Murderers.

As for the match at the weekend (Boro vs United), there are two reasons that there was a small crowd:

1 Boro fans stayed away to protest at the pricing policy of their club.

2 United were given reduced allocation because in their last few visits the fans have been smoking (shock, horror) and worse standing up!

Hell, even Old Trafford has had seats closed because the fans stand up...

    STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS...

SO those two reasons capture in a nutshell how the fans have had enough, i am a great believer that a rebellion from fans is close, and when it comes it will cost the money men dearly

I'll be of to stockport saturday to watch the lads, they used to have terracing last season but they've replaced it <IMG alt="image" SRC="frown.gif" border="0">

Agh the cheap and easy option of bolting seats onto terracing. Reminds me of the good old Baseball Ground in its latter years. Crap view and no leg room. Still prefer it to Pride Park though.

The only chance I get to stand at footbal now is when I go to watch Burton Albion. Now thats PROPER football. None of this arty-farty Premier League rubbish.

Also if you in charge of football, what would you do?

Personally I get rid of the Premier League and bring back Divisions 1,2,3 and 4.

I would have a wage cap on players. Say about £15.000 per week.

Reduce the number of teams in the Champions League and revert it back to its former name the European Cup. The current name just doesn't make any sense.

I'd increase the number of teams in the top division to 22 clubs. Therefore Div 1 - 22 clubs, Div 2 - 24 clubs, Div 3 - 24 clubs and Div 4 - 22 clubs.

I'd also limit the number of foreign (sp?) players to about 5 per club.

Bring back Match of the Day on Saturday nights!

    premiership divs 1, 2 and 3 or divs 1234 any difference ?

wage cap ? yeah that'll happen in the courts

totally agree on the champions league thing, much prefered european cup, uefa cup and cup winners cup

too many games in top flight to increase it

foreign players i like, but ec arses wouldn't

    motd here here

    I would:-

    1) re-arrange the tv money allocation to a greater percentage for smaller clubs

    2) re-introduce terracing

3)change league cup to an anglo-scotland england club competition with european placed for best club from each country

    4) bring back away day trains for all fans

    5) make it a rule away fans always get behind the goal

    6) make the game more affordable

    7) abolish european championships and have a world cup on alternate years to stop players disappearing 4 african nations etc

    8) ban derby from everything

    9) make conference professinal with sky cash

I should have made more clear. I meant going back to pre 1992 where it was all under the Football League.

There were 22 teams in the Premier league until 1995. I feel that if semi-pro players can play in 42 league games plus numours cup compititions as well as a hold down a full time job. Theres no harm it asking the pro's to play 4 more league games a season.
(Might just help in Derby's case)

    Interesting.

    Don't trust the trains.

NOOOO! I like the European Championships. Having the world cup every 2 year would devalue it.

    <STRONG>
    8) ban derby from everything</STRONG>

Hell why not! Things couldn't get any worse could they?

Don't see the difference, just the money at issue here. If the money goes to th elower leagues then I don't care what the set up is.

    <STRONG>wage cap ? yeah that'll happen in the courts</STRONG>

No wage cap, that would just force our best players abroad. If you get rid of the TV money from the top league then you don't need a wage cap. Besides, if you career could be over by the time you were 25 wouldn't you want to have earned a few quid. Just look at David Busst for an example of how one tackle can destroy your career.

I don't hear too many complaints about the £10m that Mel Gibson gets per film..

<STRONG>totally agree on the champions league thing, much prefered european cup, uefa cup and cup winners cup</STRONG>

Me too. Only changed because of money and I hate that.

<STRONG>too many games in top flight to increase it</STRONG>

and unlike the lower leagues we expect our top level players to win the world cup etc. They won't do that if they are knackered. Look at the other European Leagues, they don't expect so many games...

    <STRONG>I would:-

    1) re-arrange the tv money allocation to a greater percentage for smaller clubs</STRONG>

Yay. Divide the money between each division on a sliding scale, making sure that each gets plenty. You would still need the top to get the most because they have the biggest outlays, but make sure that money gets to the Ryman, or Doc Martens...

    <STRONG>2) re-introduce terracing</STRONG>

    No arguments here

<STRONG>3)change league cup to an anglo-scotland england club competition with european placed for best club from each country</STRONG>

Why hasn't this already happened? It would prove to the jocks that Rangers & Celtic aren't as good as they think they are...

<STRONG>4) bring back away day trains for all fans</STRONG>

    and crash the leeds ones.. <IMG alt="image" SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0">

<STRONG>5) make it a rule away fans always get behind the goal</STRONG>

All grounds should have a away end, rather than stick them on one side...

<STRONG>6) make the game more affordable</STRONG>

and that includes for away fans. funny how the prices always rise when united are in town...

<STRONG>7) abolish european championships and have a world cup on alternate years to stop players disappearing 4 african nations etc</STRONG>

No way. World Cup is better and something to look forward to when it is every four years. You can have overkill.

    <STRONG>8) ban derby from everything</STRONG>

But then who would be the joke team???

<STRONG>9) make conference professinal with sky cash</STRONG>

Nah, I prefer the amateur/prof approach that the conference has. We have two teams locally (Dover & Margate) who would never survive in a professional set up.

    Leciester City! <IMG alt="image" SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG alt="image" SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0">.

My reasoning behind getting rid of the Premier League and reverting back to Divisons 1,2,3 and 4 in principle, is because the only reason have the Premier League boils down to money.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's the top clubs wanted more money from the TV companies (BBC and ITV). So they had the idea of forming a break away league. In tern the TV companies also wanted a break away league so as they could make more money (I think).

So anyway we ended up with the Premier League.
