This is my first post in this particular forum so bear with me. Im normally in the politics one getting shot at for my views.

I've just come back from a week in America skiing and it was sooooo cool. it was my very first time. I was in New Hampshire (three days at loon mt and three at Bretton Woods - anyone else been there?).

Does anyone else out there ski at all? We started off with the basics, but then got onto the more complex stuff. We even got to go on all of the blacks and a few double diamonds. Is there a link between the two colour coding systems in Europe and America, What are the equivelents for the different levels?

Anyone thats interested at all can reply, i just wanted to see if i was the only one here that has been skiing.

Yeah, I snowboard regularly, great to hear you got the ski bug.

    Piste markings here:

    Blue: Beginner.
    Red: Intermediate.
    Black: Expert.

In Europe, it's often fairly dodgy. If you've been doing double black diamonds in the states, you should be able to handle easy blacks no problems, but be careful on the harder blacks. If you're not sure, ask. Don't find yourself at the top of a black and then be surprised when it's actually a vertical drop down a gully. It can happen.

So long as you keep your wits about you, skiing is an amazing sport, with the added bonus of doing it in some of the most amazing landscape anywhere. Hope you enjoy it.

Yeh the European system can be a bit weird. Been on more than a few blacks that really should have been reds, and vice versa. Also done a couple of double blacks (In Banff, Canada) I took one of the signs from one hom with me. The run was called freefall (answers why on a postcard) and a nice little touch was instead of the ahead arrow pointing up, it points down so now it's stuck on my door.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you, but then again we tend to ski at many of the same places. =P But I've also seen a couple of blacks that really ought not to have snow on them. Managed to avoid those.

Funnily enough, I was just there (New Hampshire) in January. I was one town over from where you went skiing. It was my first time (I was learning to snowboard), and it was so much fun. I can honestly say I'm addicted.

A couple questions though. Why would you come to America to ski when you have the Alps so close? New Hampshire is good skiing, but it doesn't compare to Chamonix over there or the Rocky mountains in the western part of the US.

The answer to that is that it was a ski trip with my school. It was one that has been running a few years and the shopping was a big draw to most of the girls.
I might not be able to go to America skiing again but hopefully to Europe soon now that i known how to.
But i've heard that the Alps is nothing compared to the US. Anyone been to both and compare them?
