Well there isn't really much point to this post but what the hell :P
Im heading to Romania on FRiday morning (6am <IMG alt="image" SRC="mad.gif" border="0"> ) with my school on a cross-community aid trip. Me and my mates managed to raise over £10,000 <IMG alt="image" SRC="smile.gif" border="0">
Anyway we'll be there for a week visiting various orphanages & hospitals. So has anyone else been on any similar trips? Any tips or advice welcome <IMG alt="image" SRC="smile.gif" border="0">

Also- keep in mind that you'll be seeing the worst areas of the country and that it shouldn't shape your entire view of what Romania is like. The places the rich and tourists go you'll probably not get to.
And just keep an open mind. People are people no matter where you go and even if you don't speak the same language a million words are conveyed in a look or a touch. If you're scared of them, they'll know. But if you're there out of compassion and care for them, they'll know that too.

I have been to Romania twice, and seen lots I went on a college exchange and have some very good friends from over there. Becasue of this our tours were distincly touristic, however it is difficult not to notice the abject poverty in places.
The country is one of the most beautiful that I have ever seen but the spectrum of wealth is amasing, while most people live in standard communist matchbox apartment blocks in the citys (I went to Arad in the more affluent west of the country only and hour from the Hungarian border) in the country it really is a subsistance life style.)
It is definatly one of the most welcoming places that I have been, with honorable people, a proud and varied history, and a rich and diverse culture, Romania has always been a meling pot for differnt counties, and there are still sections that are full of distincly Russian influences, german influences, and hungaina influenced, particulary in the arcitecture.
I would recommend the country to anyone who wants to travel or do aid work. Some of the nicest site that I saw were the Royal palace at Pelesh, the mountains in Sinia (club Blue angle rocks) and Vlad Castle (the home of the Real Dracula Vlad the impailer).
Just my thoughts.
Well im back (obviously) and it was the best week of my life. I've made some brilliant new friends and i really think its made me appreciate everything i have. I would recommened it to anyone.
