What to take to hospital...

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
(Thought this was best placed here because it's not really about health)

I've got myself a place on a 3 week inpatient pain management course and I'm a but at a loss as what to take! Obviously I need to take clothes but three weeks of things to entertain myself with. I've got an iPad with a data sim so kindle books, app suggestions would be great. I'm also taking loads of make up because I have practice for my friends wedding, and I'm going to teach my to crochet. Anything I can take to make my stay a bit more comfy would be great - got a dressing gown and comfy clothes but I'm not sure what else to take!

If you use a particular pillow for comfort (as in shape) take that.

I've got scrabble on my iPad which is good for passing the time.

an eye mask thing for night time (I really like it that it's never dark but i know it annoys lots of people)

stamps and writing paper if there's anyone you fancy writing to (obv you could just ring/fb them but letters are more fun and you will have time to write them)

something to fiddle with e.g. a stress ball

Ok, so far I have -

    Slippers
    Earplugs
    Eye mask
    V shaped pillow
    Chargers for iPad/phone
(Is it worth taking my laptop? No Internet there but there are cafés with wifi opposite)
    Some essential oils
Stamps and writing paper (and envelopes)
Wheat bags for heat (any idea where I can get them from? Boots don't seem to do them any more and they don't allow hot water bottles)
    Crochet & knitting

Any books that might be good? Films that might be good?

Loads of good ideas here! I'm going to move this into Health as I know what you mean but I think it's probably the best place for it. There may be other people going into hospital that could benefit from all these tips :)

Loads of luck with the course, let us know how you get on.

I'd also say don't take too much! You don't have loads of storage and don't want lots of valuables lying around. You can always swap things when you get visitors.

I'm going to put a lock on my suitcase, and I know I have got something I can lock up. I'm not likely to get many if any visitors asides for on weekends. The hospital I'm in is about 100 miles from MrRiot and friends so there won't be any quick visits.

Yes, if you take your laptop you can watch films which will pass the time.

I absolutely obsessed with word searches when I was in hospital and the time zoomed by.

That's got to be pretty disheartening Miss_Riot. What have you done in the first day?

I guess it's early days so it might take a while to get settled in. Are there other people on the course too?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    Hey Miss_Riot

Im sorry you feel that way :( Once you are settled in then Im sure you'll be fine :) Use something you pakced for entertainment :) Talk to people and get used to it quicker that way :) xx

The food is shite, and I'm hurting a load more than normal but I'm going to keep going as much as I can. All the other people on the course are staying in the flats and I'm in a side room on the ward.

Thats the spirit!Keep going :) Food in most hospitals and units etc are quite horrible, ,easly and disguating etc :( Ah okay.Zis there a place within the place where everyone can meet togetherto socialise?x

I've had enough of being on the ward, 3 days straight I've been asking for help to have a shower and every time I've been told to wait more or that there aren't the staff to help me. So I've had to go to the flats and have my mum help me wash my hair. I keep asking to talk to staff about issues that are coming up about the course and and i have been told i have to wait till thursday. We're been dragged to a gym tomorrow which i hate, and have said once we go home we're all on benefits we don't have the money for gym membership, so it makes no sense to have us doing things which we cant do when we come home. They won't tell us what we're going to do before we do it. We keep being told to express ourselves but when we do we get shut down. I feel i could be asked to leave the course because i don't fit in with their programme, even though they ask you to make it your own. And Mrriot isnt being that supportive either.

Hey.It sounds tough for you in the hospital at the moment.Have you not had chance to talk to any of the staff about any of it yet?Stay strong xx

I've spoken to the staff about leaving the ward to go to the flats several times a day for the past 5 days but no joy. I've really had enough but if I don't keep doing there is no other option!

What have they said when you have spoken to them?Is it any bettee than what it was before?xx

The food is still shite and I'm still bloody isolated but I refuse help with washing (so I can get it done when it suits me) and dressing so that they'll see I can go into the flats. But I think it might be a) my mental health history and b) I'm on 2 controlled drugs and they don't have the guts to tell me.
