a signature that we deem offensive or just plain annoying the mods have every right to modify it if you refuse to do so yourselves

Who decides what is annoying? What one person finds annoying another person might not? What happened to freedom of speech on this site?

    It's called consociational.

We commonly accept what freedom of speech defines, and therefore, someone has to enforce it. I could describe Hitler as spot on, and that his views on particular population groups were entirely correct, and furthermore that he was entirely right in his proposition of Final Solution.

However, while that right is technically defended in the Freedom of Speech Act, the insinuations made are not, and therefore, the offense caused is deemed to exceed the benefits of free speech. Therefore, I would be banned, or muffled.

Surely, the title of "moderator" implies that they are doing just that - and in a manner accordant with their own judgement and opinion based on experience. I wholeheartedly agree - signatures which are too large (an objective decision, surely, especially with a definite limit enshrined in the rules), or just offensive, should be removed.

I'm actually a little disappointed that no mention of text talk was made, as an indication for newbies to steer clear where possible; I think that might help a little more.

Yeah, what DJP said!! I don't really have anything to add except that we want to encourage as many people as possible to post here and therefore people's signatures should be inoffensive to most, if not all of the posters on here.

One question .... why is this in announcements? Surely it would be more sensible to put it in the 'Anything Goes' forum, or even 'Politics' if you want to get into the whole freedom of speech thing!!

Moderators moderate - not going to turn the boards into a fascist state just yet.

As for text talk - amended to include that too.

Taking offence to something is different from thinking it is annoying!

I don't want to get into freedom of speech. I was just wondering who defines what is annoying. For example, a mod might think a signature is annoying and we all might reallt love it. Who wins?
