However, I have been down the same path and have left the profession after 12 years. My reasons for changing careers were many, however one the factors that lead to my dis-contentment was the bureaucratic rubbish that surrounds the provision of health care in this country.
I don't regret my initial career choice, but reality turned out to be very different than the idealistic and ultraistic portrayals that are offered by families, friends, teachers and career advisors.
I would encourage you to speak to some doctors ( maybe your own), so that you get a broader perspective of what the profession really offers; the joys and pains!
Good luck.

Squinty don't put me off now!!
Don't get me wrong: there are many rewards to be derived from the profession; I am sure you have aleady started to, and will reap them. As I said earlier:
For that, I would wholeheartedly support and encourage your professional growth and development.
Good on you and Good Luck.
PS: I have many friends that are doctors, dentists, physiotherapists, pharmacists,..., that wouldn't give up their careers for anything. Another thing is that each has a different take on their professional happiness; each is as individual as the person themselves
