Alternatives to graduate scheme jobs

Does anyone know any alternatives to graduate scheme jobs to get into a certain industry. Often, graduate schemes have very high academic requirements and are very competitive. For example, instead of applying for a graduate scheme at a large retailer or airport, could you start as a sales assistant/customer service assistant and have the same opportunities as if you were on the graduate scheme, even if it takes longer?

    Hi Ybe7.

I would say this is definitely a possibility. The opportunities are likely to exist, but as you say it may take longer. Some industries also don't specifically do a graduate scheme, just need well-qualified people, so you can definitely do a job search wider than just "graduate scheme".

You may have already looked, but this page has some great suggestions on what to consider when job hunting and where to look.

Overall though, it's often more important that you're looking for a job you really want to do and have some stuff on your CV to help support that, so if what you want isn't a graduate scheme, there's no need to apply for one just because you're technically a graduate! :)
