At my work place the owners of the cafe, get to keep all the tips we earn, is that right?

    Depends. A tip left at your table or given to you is a 'gift' and so your property.

    If the tips are pooled, then your employer can keep some, if not all, back to pay for example shortages in the till.

    If the tip is added to a credit card or cheque then it is your employers property and they can do what they want with it.

    Any employer who keeps tips is a cunt.

    What RS said. If you are handed the cash, it is yours to keep as it is a gift. If it is added to the credit payment or listed on the bill as a service charge then it is upto the boss. You're under no obligation to hand your boss any cash left on a table.

    I quit earlier, they weren't the best to work for.

    But the tips were either left on the table, and wehad to put it in the tip pot. Or if we were serving then the customer put it in the pot, but we never got anything from the pot.
