I'd always wondered, at big crossings with several junctions if the button did anything, apparently not in some situations.

    Some of them do work, in the sense that even if the cars stop in a junction for the cars from the other side to pass, and at that time no cars will be passing over the pedestrian crossing, the light won't turn green unless the button has been pressed.
    The weirdest of all is when there's a simple crossing (cars coming from only one direction) and, after the pedestrian light turns red again, the light for the cars will also stay red long enough that I estimate an old person with two canes would have time to cross at least twice more. No exaggeration.
