im not too sure abotu those subjects drifter, sorry could you ask your teachers for those subjects, or maybe a careers advisor?

i dont have a clue where to go!!! im having trouble deciding, and i think i have until the end of april, or it might be march

ive been accepted everywhere i applied apart from bristol, where there were 800 applicants for 50 places! lol

but my choices are going to be between cardiff, bath, southampton and maybe warwick i want to do biochemistry, only i think i mgith sway towards the "bio" part, and the degree at southampton lets me take pretty much anythign i want. only cardiff and bath have a higher rating by that assessment thingy whatsit, but only by a little bit. i really like cardiff, the place and atmosphere and city and stuff. and i qutie like bath, only im worried its a bit small and maybe a bit quiet and not like a city like cardiff is. and warwick's a bit out of the way, well not really in any particular city. i havent been to southampton yet, they want me there at like 11am and i live in cornwall

so basically i dont have a clue!!!!!

sorry for hogging your topic drifter, ill start another one maybe if people start ignoring your post!

If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else.

Royal Holloway is good for English and I hear the French department is very good. The social life is great...which is always a plus.

No, they do speak English as a first language in Scotland

I think it was a reference to their interesting and different way of speaking the language. The same can be said for Australia, America, Wales and other countries where they speak a variant of English. It wasn't that hard to understand was it????

Going back to the topic just for a sec., I wanted to do a BSc in Maths, and being in Bristol I applied to them (not a chance, filled up in no time), so I went the the Open University, got a prospectus, and now do my degree part time.

I gotta say, the coursework and support you get is A1, but feedback from other students indicates that a lot depends on which tutor you get for your particular year, but then I expect the same problems would occur at a regular Uni.

    hey Guys!

when chosing a university, the best bit of advice I can give you is, wherever possible, look at the 'old' universities before the 'new' universities. don't know the difference? All 'Polytechnics' became 'Universities' around 1993 - and employers will tend to look more favourably on the older names. Cardiff, Bristol, Reading, LSE, Warwick, briminghamm etc not to mention Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge). These universities will often have more established facilites (Cardiff, Birmingham and Warwick are superb!), but this is not always the case (Reading is a beautiful campus but unless the Students Union has changed dramatically in the last three years - yeuch!)

Newer uni's may have nice new halls etc, but are often spread out over a large area as they are literally an amalgamation of lots of old institutes, teacher training colleges etc. Often if a university has "institute" in the title, or is named after a county rather than a town (University of Wales Institute of Cardiff [UWIC], University of Glamorgan) this is often a pointer that this is a 'new' university. However, it really depends on what you're studying - looking at UWIC, whereas a business degree may not be the highest regarded in the UK, the Sports degrees are probably the best, or close to the best, in the UK

Finally - go somewhere where you feel you'd enjoy. Some Universities have beautiful old buildings that fulfill some long-kindled romantic ideal, others (such as Warwick) are located miles from anywhere, but consist of a fantastic Students Union and an incredible modern campus (not to ervyones tastes though!). DONT do something just 'cause it's what everyone expects you to do - be brave, look around, - it's your life. And remember - if you get it wrong, SPEAK TO SOMEONE - you can, under most ciscumstances, withdraw or transfer ot start at a different university the following year - but it is VITAL you get any such decision in writing - trust me - I've been there!

University should be a brilliant experience. If you get there and you're just not enjoying it - ask yourself why? Maybe you're at the wrong uni, doing the wrong course or - gasp! - maybe you're just not up for the university thing! You can always take a gap year, work, travel, return, do something different - it's up to you!
