recently i've begun to think of doing a degree in psychology. ive been leaning towards biology really.... biochemistry, what i applied for, ive definitely decided against.... but there are still aspects of human biology i enjoy. theres a course at cardiff (where i want to go) that combines psychology with physiology. (good degree to talk about when you're pissed!! lol)...

so basically i was wondering if anyone's taken a degree/modules in either psychology or physiology? and if they have... can they pleeease give me an idea of what to expect, what the courses involve, etc... the university prospectus on the website aint all that helpful!

thanks for reading this

Hey!
I did a degree in psychology not so long ago! If you like biology then you will be fine! A lot of people go into psychology expecting it will help you analyse body language and relationships but that is more psychoanalysis.
Things you may expect include looking at stress, drugs and how they affect your emotions, attention (a biggie), memory (first year essential), neurological (brain) disorders, how we learn to read, child emotional development, depression, anxiety, creativity, consciousness, sleep, dreams and social interaction.
The course also involves practical experiments where you will rope friends and enemies in to being your subjects.
I enjoyed the course (I did mine at Swansea) and it offers a lot of opportunities for employment afterwards.
A good book to flick through would be Gross - an intoduction to psycholgy, or Atkinson, they are first year university text books.
A lot of places offer joint degrees between biology and psychology BUT you won't be recognised by the British Psychological Society afterwards (important if want to be a psychologist). The best option is to choose a modular course where you can study both in your first year and then choose one or the other, it is fairly easy to switch courses at the end of the first year.
Good Luck

thankts to those of you who've replied especially susie! the course sounds really interesting, i think i may well give it a shot the thing with the course at cardiff joint with physiology is that you ARE still recognised by the British Psychological Society (i read the small print ) ... i have no idea what i want to do afterwards, a psychologist is a possibility, so i can freak out people like lolly lol..

hmmm now i have to try and figure out whether i want to do it with physiology or not.... hmmmmm... oh i only have until thursday lol.... if i decide i want to go to uni this year, i can try and beg cardiff to find a place for me on the course after i get my results... or at least defer my entry to next year, to save the reapplying hassle. its a bit of a rush though trying to decide all of this by results day.... the likelihood is ill take a gap year to earn some money and get my head together... although i REALLY dont like the idea of being stuck in this little shithole of a place

i'll have a hunt around and see if i can find those books you recommended (or ask my library if they have anything resembling a first year text book!!)

i think i might go and search around the net for more info about it, im really getting interested now (thanks for your concern jeff *hugs*)

Hello GFM, as you probably know I did a Applied Bio course which covered a lot of physiology. It tends to focus mostly on how bodies are adapted to live in environmental conditions, homeostasis, heat exchange etc, etc. Not sure how that would combine with psychology, but there are functional physio courses that specifically deal with internal/external environment interactions.

Right GFM. If you like Biology and Psychology you could do psychology of humans and go into Pathology or Foresnsic Science depends if you like dead ppl!!!! My brother is a Clinical psychologist which is like the hardest area in psychology (you can't carry the job unless you get A in psychology Alevel, 1st honours etc.) but it's a good course to do because you can do anything with psychology such as teaching (dreadful thought) police anything much!!

Hope that helps. And i know the feeling with the propectus's.....useless things!!!! Good Luck!!

Hey there,

I am currently in my second year at uni doing, what hopefully will be an Honours Degree in psychology. I had always wanted to do psych but heard that it was really popular thus competitive and difficult to get in to.

However i went ahead anyway and applied, and it is the best thing i did. Yes first year was a bit boring, but i am really enjoying second year, as you go into the subjects which were covered generally in first year, in far more depths. The good thing about psych is that it is relevant in every area of life, as it is the study of the human mind and behaviour. Also it looks good on your CV!!!

My favourite topics are Abnormal Psych, Memory and Language. I say go for it, there is something there which will interest everyone.

thanks emmex

i decided that i did want to do psychology for definite... but i didnt get the grades for cardiff and thats where i really want to go. also id been having some other problems as well so i decided to take a year out to get my head together and earn some money. oh, and improve one of my grades from a C to an A with any luck, and im taking an A level in psychology as well. okay thats an AS level and A2 alongside each other, which is interesting as i might cover some things in year 13 before year 12! but i am finding it really interesting, even if it is a bit slow as the course is aimed at people 2 years younger than me :-\ i cant wait for uni so i can actually study it in depth. im glad i decided to wait the extra year and be sure i know what i want to do just a shame i cant go off to uni in january or something!! that'd suit me fine...

tut tut!, the correct term(ir so have have just learned in 6th form ) is participants!! apparantly it makes the power relationship not as strong, therefore the participant feels more comfy
