Refused help from CMHT :( :'(

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
In 2010 I was seen by CMHT I had some difficulties so I left and the staff were not very understanding. I made a complaint. Told that I may have psychosis and had an assessment, turns out I didn't. Was then reffered to a consultant psychiatrist who saw me for about two years every three months. Until last year in April I never got an appointment so I phoned up and they said he had retired. I find change very difficult so I was worried about what would happen to me in terms of how my medicine would be monitored and how I wouldn't have the access to support.

Then I was offered an appointment with locum doctors of one said I might have autism. Went to my GP who didn't listen but said if you went private we would consider your report of a diagnosis. My mum took me to see a private specialist who said I did have Asperger's syndrome. I then took the report back to my GP who refused to help and said lots of things including that I should go back to the CMHT who are dealing with me. They are the only couselling NHS service where I live.

Anyhow then I was seen by locum psychiatrists and They increased my medication to 20mg citalopram. I was told that I wasn't allowed a service and they signposted me instead. I made an official complaint which means now they should have taken me seriously. As I had already seen that service in 2010 they are not allowing me to see anyone know even though that therapy was cut short to 4-5 sessions since I didn't get on with the therapist. Now I'm being told the clinical lead has refused me to see anyone in that department I have been waiting to hear from 3 months thinking I may get a assessment before putting myself on the waiting list. No one had gotten back to me and the complaint officer is the CMHT manager but won't listen. Should I complain to the ombudsman once I get an official response.

I have since had a panic attack, I feel like I might die and I don't know how to cope. I've been trying to think about what I should do but I'm stuck. Anyone got any generic advice please??:nervous:
Thanks.

That sounds like a really tough situation and I am really sorry to hear you're going through that *hug*

Is your doctor aware that the team are refusing to see you? I would definitely say it's worth making a further complaint, but have you also considered PALS? They are the patients, advisory, liaison service. They do advocacy work and may work with you to get your point across. This is the NHS webpage on pals and can explain it better than I can!

They can support you in getting your voice heard and therefore hopefully ensuring you get the help you need. It maybe worth giving them a call, do you think?

    Take care! xx

    Thanks Ellie;)
I haven't been back to see my GP as I'm afraid she won't listen she's always telling me to go back or saying its my fault for discharging myself etc. I did make a complaint through the complaints department at the hospital. Is PALS different? I would certainly try calling them to see if they can help. I'm really stressed out that its started to affect my health. I get regular headaches, eat less and my hairs also falling out. I will call them tommorow and let you know how I get on :)
    Thank you x

The PALS support you in getting your voice across, so you don't make the complaint to them. But they will assist you in putting in a complaint to the hospital, if that makes sense? Also, with the backup of PALS, it may be more likely that the complaints department will deal with your complaint more promptly. Do let us know!

    xx

If your in London there's an mental health advocacy charity called loud and clear which can help. If not they might know of someone local to you who can help.

 - Here is their guide to complaining about health and social care.

Also, if your GP isn't being helpful or supportive, remember that you are entitled to ask to see a different one - sometimes it can make all the difference. Our article about alternatives to GPs outlines how to do this as well as giving more info about the likes of PALS and how to complain about your GP if you wanted to do this.

I really hope you get some more support out of the health system soon.
    Take care :)

Still having problems with this.. Waiting on the letter about my complaint once I get a formal letter I can go to the ombudsman if I want but that's if they will take my case. Not found anywhere else to get any support and struggling. Haven't been out of the house in a while :/ have talked to my Connexions advisor on the phone but not a lot they can help with. I would go private and have therapy but afford it being on benefits. What I don't get is why I'm being singled out from CMHT. Sometimes you aren't ready for treatment and you can come back and try after three years but since they know about my Aspergers I haven't got a chance. Though the anxiety and panic comes through a lot I hoped I would get some help with that.

CMHT seem to run very differently to everyone else. I know it's hard but you will eventually get the help you deserve, even if it means fighting your corner.
Do you get any type of support with anyone else that could help you whilst you go trough the frustrating process of making a complaint about CMHT?

    Hey Sophie
Thanks for your message. Nope not really. Just seeing the eating disorders service for binge eating/bulimia but that appointment is every three months. Seeing the psychiatrist and on a long waiting list for any support with those issues. If nothing works I will just have to stick to focusing on getting better with their help. I also have my Connexions advisor but that's more to so with career/Uni type thing. Letter has been posted on how I can take this forward hoping its something positive that I can take forward and get the help from CMHT that I need. x
