Knitting help please

I'm trying to get back into knitting... my friend bought me some yarn and I'm following the instructions on the back and it says knit 7 stitches 4cm apart. I managed to cast on OK at 4cm apart, but how do I keep the stitches spaced? Any tips pro knitters?

I'm not a pro but that doesn't make any sense to me! Have you got a photo of the pattern instructions?

Yeah, I agree that doesn't make any sense - what kind of yarn is it?

If it really wants you to do that, I'd suggest knitting very loosely and pulling the stitches down the right needle before knitting the next one, but even that is going to tighten up over time.

Are you sure it doesn't mean that the 7 stitches should be 4cm altogether?

Is it one of those funny ruched yarns?

If so, pick up one loop on the yarn every 4 cm to start. Does that make sense?

    Yeah!

Here's the picture.... Attachment not found.

I managed to cast on stitches 4cm apart but then failed at getting past that. Is this just too hard for me :P?

No, it's just counter-intuitive to people who know how to knit properly. Instead of wrapping yarn around the needle to knit a stitch, you just pick one up.

It's really easy when you get going; for Christmas presents and quickies it's really good.
