Psychiatrists - I detest them

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
All psychiatrists do is simply tell their patients to be religious, and they only enter the profession to presume control over their patients. They don't seem to get it's not 1900, people don't respect positions any more.

Why do we need psychiatrists?

My psychiatrist has never mentioned religion... in fact, no mental health professional I have seen (there have bwen many) has.

If one did, I would consider it abuse of power and reporth them...

And yes, we do need pschiatrists... To diagnose and issue happy pills (apparently).

Well in my estimation, psychiatrists are evil. They tell people all sorts of foolishness, and like to dominate and control their patients.

Their "profession" is also grounded on a faulty premise, as normalcy is subjective.

Indeed. If anything, I've felt looked down on by mental health professionals for having a faith.

Psychiatrists are not supposed to mention faith or comment on it, it's unprofessional and downright ignorant to do so. Psychiatrists are there to help people, they're doctors that just decided that they wanted to go the way of mental health instead of physical health. The way the media portrays them doesn't help much, either. At the end of the day they're all human beings themselves, they're there to help you, and most of the time they do try their best. Unfortunately there's the very rare case where human error can make someone slip up. Have you had a bad experience with a psychiatrist before, or are you basing it on a friend's or relative's experience?

Surely if you're seeing a psychiatrist then you already know (in your personal case) what you are seeing them for?

As for the religion thing, as mentioned above they shouldn't really be bringing religion up. If they are, I just wanted to check that you are in the UK? Just this is primarily a UK based message board.

I have in the past seen a lot of mal feeling directed towards people of that profession; now I don't doubt for one minute that many people do encounter issues with these professionals from time to time, but it does make me wonder.

I guess its the case that on a web forum such as this, that many people will only post when there is a perceived problem and they are looking for advice. I guess its not the case that people would come on here saying how good and helpful a psychiatrist is. However, as stated above, I do believe that many people will encounter genuine issues, but such a professional body cant always be wrong the majority of the time.

Is it not perhaps akin to the 15 year olds who are adamant that they are grown up and mature, and will argue the point till blue in the face, who then in later years realise how young they still were?

Just some random thoughts that is.

I have met 5 psychiatrists in my time. 3 were horrible and incredibly insensitive, 1 was really helpful, and another one was fairly non-descript. I think the problem with psychiatrists is that they are essentially medical doctors that happen to specialise in mental health. They have to remain emotionally detatched, and analyse your behavior during the session and come up with a diagnosis. If they had more time to just get to know the patient before getting into this analytical state I think many people would be better diagnosed. I don't know diagnosis techniques but I think sometimes they mirror their perseption of how you're behaving to see how you react, which can be really off putting. Most have pretty poor bed-side manner. They are not at all like you're average GP who will hand you a box of tissues at the first sign of a wobbley lip.

I'm seeing one on friday so I'll be able to add a little more to this but they are often odd to say the least.
