TheSite Film Club Nominations

Thought we'd better give this a go as quite a few people expressed interest :hyper:

A few guidelines first.

The idea is for two films to be nominated each month, I think that having a selection of two will give people a better chance to get hold of at least one of them. However both films cannot be certificate 18 as we need an option for younger members. If two films that are certificate 18 are nominated then one will be chosen at random and the next film with the highest votes that isn't certificate 18 will be picked. Each month follows a theme very much like book club. The theme for October unsurprisingly is going to be Halloween! Interpret that how you will :) Suggestions for upcoming themes would also be great, especially November's..

Again the themes are there for you to interpret how you want but no Bambi this month please even if it did ruin your childhood. My nomination for this month is definitely not something I consider frightening but it definitely fits well into the theme. Subtitled films are definitely not excluded from nominations. Nor is anime or anything else you can think of. But...err.. no porn please.

When nominating a film, if it's quite obscure you may want to think about it's availability. A quick search on Lovefilm or the Netflix database should let you know if anyone can actually get hold of it. Also it would be helpful especially if you are posting a trailer to include the age certificate. The age certificate for each film will also be included in the poll when it is posted.

And if we get into the sticky situation of having a tie breaker then a trusted person can pick the film title out of a hat/flip a coin/ throw a slice of buttered toast out the window and that can be the decider.

Looking at time frame I was thinking.. Nominations for next month's films could begin around two weeks before the end of the previous month and last for a week. In the last week of the month we can all vote using a poll and the winner can be announced at the end of each month.

A thread for discussion about last month's films called also follow the same time frame. So in the week that we are nominating next month's films we can also be discussing the current films. Then in the week we are voting for next month's films perhaps Jo will let us open a monthly chat to discuss the current films of the month.

So if we open up nominations for a week starting today. I can put up a poll next Friday on the 21st and the two winners can be announced the following Friday (28th).

It might be useful to include a trailer for the film you are nominated and a reason for nomination. It goes without saying but no getting carried away and giving out spoilers..

Let me know if this all sounds okay to folk??

So... please let the nominations for October's films begin! The theme is Halloween... :D

Edited to add: We realise that TheSite.org is aimed at 16-25 year olds but we're aware some members of the community are under 16. Some of the films suggested in film club will be 15 certificate and above so if you're under 15 then you watch these films at your own risk.

My nomination for this month is An American Werewolf in London. Certificate- 18

I hadn't even watched it till a few months back. It's one of those films that makes you want to smack yourself in the face for not having seen it sooner. Very, very funny and just the right amount of tomato ketchup style gore for Halloween. Plus it's an 80's film!! :yippe:

Erm, should we make the certificate limit a 15? due to the age-range of TheSite?

    Anyway, so if we're not

    Silence of the lambs (18)
    If we are

    The Witches (PG)

I'm not sure actually. I guess this website is aimed at 16-25 year olds and so not allowing 18 rated films would be a bit unfair. Not sure whether it's upto users to use their own discretion or whether thesite would be responsible in some way.

Maybe we can have a rule in place so that the two films nominated each month can't both be certificate 18?

    Upto the mods I guess

And The Witches  I love Anjelicka Houston

Seems fair, they're easy enough to avoid anyway. I have found, slightly, that 18 certificates are not always better films. So, job done, and if when the poll goes up you stick the certificate next to the film title??

Sent a PM to Jo and she's gonna doublecheck with the team. Yeah that's another good point. Maybe we should put the certificate on our nominations too especially if we're including the trailer? Gonna go back and edit mine now

Is there a limit to how many films we can each nominate?

    nope :)

Jo got back to me and the original post is now edited to include:

However both films cannot be certificate 18 as we need an option for younger members. If two films that are certificate 18 are nominated then one will be chosen at random and the next film with the highest votes that isn't certificate 18 will be picked.

    :)

and also a disclaimer in bold at the bottom. I might work on tidying up the guidelines at the begining of next week as it may not be so clear now with all of the edits..

We're talking Halloween related films, yet no-one has nominated Halloween?

Last time we did film club a few years ago we had 18s including Y tu mama tambien and BettyBlue. Most of what got nominated was foreign subtitled films. That was back in Jim V's day though.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I miss JimV and his reccomendations.

We can nominate certificate 18 but the two winning films can't both be certificate 18 because it'd be unfair to younger members. If that happens then then the film with the second highest votes will take its place.

Gonna work on the guidelines today and tomorrow so it's worded clearer too.

And a big jolly old bump More nominations please!!

I first watched this nomination when I was only 6 or 7 years old. It scared the living shit out of me. I never want to see it again, but part of me thinks, if I do, then I'll realised how retarded it is.

    and so, without further ado

    Nightmare on Elm Street (18)

I'd quite honestly say the Witches is scarier than the Silence of the Lambs.

Agree. I found The Witches terrifying. Especially the back story at the begining with the little girl in the painting...

Same for me, but the film is The Exorcist (18) I should watch it at some point.

I can't watch horror films so might end up watching the 15 film or under after all if one of those horror films wins.

Not a horror film but pretty fucked up was AntiChrist. I really enjoyed it although it is a tad disturbing.

    Love Exposure

Caught this film after the pub one night and didn't stop watching till I was sober. A four hour plus Japanese movie with themes surrounding Catholic guilt, love, cults, up-skirt fetishism, and transvestism. It's violent, bloody, funny, perverted and romantic.

Thanks Jo :D I was thinking the last week of each month. Perhaps it could be a Wednesday too if that's convenient for everyone?

Keep the nominations coming guys :) We're gonna have a nice big poll at the end of the week. Haha pole.

Last Wednesday of the month is fine by us - so potentially then the first film club chat would be October 31st? How does that sound?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Aww. I'll miss the first film club chat. But looking forward to the next one
