Hey guys,

I remember for the exam stress and revision chat we had, and remembered I said I would share a few tips on things with you. So... Let's get this party rocking!:yippe:

Students can perform better on tests if they change study habits to fit their own personal learning styles. Some students remember best materials they've seen, some remember things they've heard, while others remember things they've experienced.

Visual Learners Charateristics

Visual learners are those who learn through seeing things. Look over the characteristics below to see if they sound familiar. A visual learner:
  • Is good at spelling but forgets names
  • Needs quiet study time
  • Has to think awhile before understanding lecture
  • Is good at spelling
  • Likes colors & fashion
  • Dreams in color
  • Understands/likes charts
  • Is good with sign language

Tips for Visual Learners:
  • Draw a map of events in history or draw scientific process
  • Make outlines of everything
  • Copy what's on the board
  • Ask the teacher to diagram
  • Diagram sentences
  • Take notes, make lists
  • Watch videos
  • Color code words, research notes
  • Outline reading
  • Use flashcards
  • Use highlighters, circle words, underline

Auditory Learners Characteristics

Auditory learners are those who learn best through hearing things. Look over these traits to see if they sound familiar to you. You may be an auditory learner if you are someone who:
  • Likes to read to self out loud
  • Is not afraid to speak in class
  • Likes oral reports
  • Is good at explaining
  • Remembers names
  • Notices sound effects in movies
  • Enjoys music
  • Is good at grammar and foreign language
  • Reads slowly
  • Follows spoken directions well
  • Can't keep quiet for long periods
  • Enjoys acting, being on stage
  • Is good in study groups

Tips for Auditory Learners
  • Using word association to remember facts and lines
  • Recording lectures
  • Watching videos
  • Repeating facts with eyes closed
  • Participating in group discussions
  • Using audiotapes for language practice
  • Taping notes after writing them

Kinesthetic Learner Characteristics

Kinesthetic learners are those who learn through experiencing/doing things. Look over these traits to see if they sound familiar to you. You may be a kinesthetic learner if you are someone who:
  • Is good at sports
  • Can't sit still for long
  • Is not great at spelling
  • Does not have great handwriting
  • Likes science lab
  • Studies with loud music on
  • Likes adventure books, movies
  • Likes role playing
  • Takes breaks when studying
  • Builds models
  • Is involved in martial arts, dance
  • Is fidgety during lectures

Tips for Kinesthetic Learners
  • Studying in short blocks
  • Taking lab classes
  • Role playing
  • Taking field trips, visiting museums
  • Studying with others
  • Using memory games
  • Using flash cards to memorize

I hope this will in somewhat help you with what kind of styles would be better for you. Need any more tips and tricks? Give us a shout! :thumb:

This is really interesting Sophieannn, which kind of learner are you?

Also to everyone studying at the moment, remember we have a section on TheSite about how to study which is worth checking out: http://www.thesite.org/workandstudy/studying/howtostudy

You might do elements from all of them, but you'll usually have a preference. Try http://www.brainboxx.co.uk/a3_aspects/pages/vak_quest.htm

I find learning styles very interesting. Perhaps before I retire I'll be a teacher and get to use them :p

I always thought I was an auditory learner because, as a history major, all of my classes were lecture and I'd come away with a dozen pages of solid notes. Once we started getting really into styles in my teaching classes, I realized I was actually a very very hands on learner and the big blocks of text were normal for my situation, while others thought I was weird :p

When I need to search for notes, oddly enough, I can easily find what I'm looking for, though if I read something like that online, I'd skip right over it.

I've kept all my history notes for future use and I have about a dozen and a half notebooks filled front to back just like the attached...

Just thinking, that I suppose that I must have had to get the hang of auditory learning to do university...

I'm very much a visual learner but I'm not good at art or whatever. I deconstruct ideas in my head and reconstruct them to help get a grasp on them. Often it helps to go for a walk with a difficult thing to visualise as I can use the environment to help. In fact I think walking outside was an essential part of my studying and learning process.

One of the most provoking images I remember when I was writing my final project was that of a naked pregnant woman.

Not necessarily Fiend- My Name's characteristic usage of making notes in a lecture class is actually very typical of a kinaesthetic learner, transferring auditory material into their learning style of physically writing and producing the notes.

I'm more of auditory Learner... But some of my characteristics are found under Kinesthetic Learner. Is it possible that one can have 2 types of learning characteristics?
