Only Connect

I thought we might have a go at Only Connect. Start with the first round for now, to keep it simple.

Here's how it works. List 4 connected things, and people have to work out the connection.

e.g.

(1) Scary
(2) Sporty
(3) Posh
(4) Baby

Obviously, these are all Spice Girls. Try to make them a little harder ;)

Here's my first attempt:
(1) Mr. Rochester
(2) Julian, Dick, Anne and George
(3) The Baskervilles
(4) Winston Churchill

The theme is dogs or literary dogs?

Jane comes across Mr Rochester's dog when he's thrown from the horse.
The 5th member of the famous five was Timmy, a dog.
If we're going Hound of the Baskervilles then the Baskerville's are haunted by the spectre of a hellhound, IIRC.
Winston Churchill was referred to by the Russians as the British Bulldog. Also the silly nodding dog from the adverts.

Which? The theme of dogs or literary dogs? :)

Dogs is close. The Churchill connection specifically was wrong (although clever, and not one I'd made!!)
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Churchill referred to his depression as a black dog if that helps.... Not really familiar with the others, so don't think I'll be able to get the link.

    Close enough!

This isn't really catching on, is it?

Only because you already told me the answer :o

It's because the one you did was too hard! Try an easier one!
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
So the answer was 'dogs'? Just that I got the last one wrong?

No, the answer was, specifically, 'black dogs'.

Hence why she said your last answer was wrong, because you got the link wrong :p.

Ah, ok. So I wasn't a million miles off.

    Good puzzle, Piccolo!

What do David Attenborough, the Thames Barrier, Gary Glitter and Enrique Inglesias have in common?

What do David Attenborough, the Thames Barrier, Gary Glitter and Enrique Inglesias have in common?

All I can think of is that I don't like the look of any of them ;)

    Anyone got any ideas?

What do David Attenborough, the Thames Barrier, Gary Glitter and Enrique Inglesias have in common?

    They've all been up something

    David up the north pole

Thames barrier up in the air

    Gary Glitter up kids

    Enrique up the charts

N.B. Could also apply to down (south pole for our Dave)

Only thing I can think of is it involves something with airplanes.

Glitter was forced to fly home after he was refused entry to Vientam/HK etc. after the child porn case.
And Enrique Inglesias once had to make a emergency landing (another case of being forced).
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
nope, I think you are thinking too much, I tried to make it easier to solve!

    8th of May

    My go :)

    Mine, wheel, aeroplane, candle.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    well done :thumb:

Well, the only thing I can think of at the moment is they are all revolutionary discoveries/inventions.

The candle allowed us to see in the dark, the wheel allowed us to venture into previously undiscovered areas/ move heavy items around and the areoplane allowed us to discover the world easily.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
nope, although i suppose that could apply but it's not my connection.

As this thread seems to of, unfortunately, dieded :(

    They're all...... types of firework.

    Catherine Wheel

    Roman Candle.

A mine is a self contained mini-mortar that shoots stars etc from the ground, rather than a shell into the air.

Aeroplane, also called helicopter. Banned now, used to put them on the ground/wall, light it and it span off into the night - or your face !
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    Ah, I just didn't see it :(

    Try another one!
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    Gold, lead, iron, mercury.

Yes, all metallic elements but it's not that. Scary should get this.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
they're all in this song :thumb:

edit: Oh man, now I have this going round my head just in time for bedtime....

edit edit: I know know the answer. But I cheated so won't say!
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    Hahahahahaha. Genius, purpledhaze!
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru

  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    I cheated too.

I know there's an answer not to do with the element song, just it jumped into my head before I finished reading the four elements. I'm a science nerd like that...!

And in this case, cheating was educational.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    I'll give you a clue.

It's nothing to do with the type of element, their weight, any physical property, order, position on the periodic table.

These would not be in the list oxygen, magnesium, chromium, Arsenic
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I logged in to guess alchemy but I don't know if that discounts the other four so now I'm confusing.
