Going the pub on your own

Hey.
Im 20, male btw

Im off work for the next few days (had a half day today) so I ended up going into town for the day. I fancied a drink after a bit of shopping so im currently sitting in a pub on my smartphone. I am actually enjoying myself a bit but it would be better with someone.

Anyway, is it sad to sit in a pub on your own esp at my age?I have a paper with me but that only lasts so long. Thing is id like to stay out a few hours (its 1440 atm)

Pretty much everyone here on their own is old which is fine and makes sense but it would be a bit strange to start talking to them.

Any regular pub soloers? What do you do?

I don't do it regularly, but I some times goto the cinema on my own or nip for a drink. Some times it's nice to get out of the house even if you're on your own.

I'd probably draw the line at cinema but dont see a problem having a pint alone!

I have a cineworld card, so on a Saturday morning once I've dropped the mrs off at work I'll nip in early doors if there's something on she isn't fussed about seeing. Doesn't cost me anything, so it's like watching a blu-ray, but bigger. Well, that's how I justify it ;)

What's the problem with the cinema? The main reason people go there is to watch a film. This activity doesn't require company in any way.

I probably prefer going to the cinema by myself because it is, effectively, a solitary pursuit. It's not like you can have a good conversation in the middle of the film.

I go to the pub by myself fairly regularly because sometimes I just want to spend an hour in the company of a good beer, me, myself and I. I don't want to talk to other people, I just want to piss about on twitter calling Ed Milliband a flange. I'm sure some people do look at me as though I'm a sad sack but, hey, I don't care.

As for talking to new people in the pub when I've been out alone, I've done that quite a few times, especially on a night. Sometimes I've been out alone and once it was because I had to put my plastered friend back on the bus home at half eight. It's entertaining to talk shite with new people.

I'm definitely in the going the cinema on my own camp. I sneak a couple of bottles of beer in, or a half bottle of wine, and enjoy the film like a civilised gent.

I do it occasionally. Go down the pub with a book, have a pint, spend an hour. Quite relaxing as it goes.

I often end up in coffee shops by myself, but I do sometimes feel a bit odd going for a drink on my own...unless theres a good book and a beer garden or an open fire involved.

The cinema I go to has a real ale bar at the back. Tyneside Cinema FTW

    I'm a bit jealous.

There's one in Brighton that has a bar, but you pay for the privilege (ticket price) and they only have one screen so don't show all the new releases.

I have often gone to the cinema on my own. There is a certain aura about seeing a film in the cinema over the seeing it in dvd. If you are not talking to people then why is going to the cinema such a bad thing on your own.

i dont see any problem at all in doing things on your own.

I'm ok with going to the cinema on my own but not the pub. In the cinema you're sitting in the dark and not supposed to be talking. Everyone is staring straight ahead and the screen and watching the film. I've never felt self concious doing that alone. Its no worse than watching TV alone.

I find being alone in the pub really horrible. You just stand or sit there with your drink feeling like a leper or something. I thought it would be a good way to get out there and meet new people like at uni but people seem to go to pubs in groups and stay in those groups. They certainly don't want to be approached by random people they don't know.

It must depend on the city.

I've been out a couple of times alone, or I've ended up alone when I've had to put my lightweight friend back on the bus. People have ended up talking to me and I've actually had quite a good time.

I think its fine, I often go to coffee shops on my own and sit and read a book or do some work. It can sometimes be a good way to meet attractive young ladies as well :thumb: but often just quiet relaxing it really does depend on the type of pub or cafe

Nothing wrong with it, if I've got something arranged for later with an hour or two to spare I'll go to a pub or coffee shop on my own without a second thought. Certain sorts of pubs always have at least one regular sitting at the bar who will talk to anyone who'll listen - though whether you'll want to listen is another matter...

As an expat I have gone out alone many times, to watch football can be great. I have also done it with the specific intention of meeting people. I am quite an outgoing chap though, I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with it if you can get over the social "shame", there is too much of that in the UK.

Before 8pm this is acceptable. Afterwards, it is not.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    Why 8pm?

After 8pm you turn into a pumpkin if you're by yourself.

Because 8pm is that magical hour where you transform from hip, casual drinker to soulless raging alcoholic.

I'm from Liv too, 21. Its not weird. I've gone the pub for a drink during dinner breaks on my own before (even when I was 19). I usually take something with me, like a book. I'll probably do it more often when I'm in the city centre on my dinner break. Its like I'll go into pizza hut or starbucks etc. to eat/drink as a treat and to be on my own and relax. I don't go the cinema on my own, I don't like them generally, I only visit with 1 friend every few months.

Personally, I think there's nothing wrong with it at all. I go to coffee shops and bring books with me and am perfectly contented. It can be a bit awkward, but its good especially when there's alot of stuff going on. I find it helps when friends are having arguments. I sometimes go into Cardiff by myself and there are advantages than when with friends. You can spend more time in shops looking at you want (can spend hours in Waterstones....) and not feel bad. You just feel independent.
A few people said that they feel nervous. Sometimes if I'm meeting people I get there an hour earlier at the coffee shop so I can chill by myself. I'm still not brave enough to go cinemas by myself though....

It somewhat depends what you want out of it. Pubs can vary in how sociable they are, so if you are looking to meet new friends you want to find the right sort of place. Cosy, local type places are the best for this but even they can vary in terms of time as well as place. You can find that you are getting chatting to the regulars and building a rapport, but in the next couple of years it has become more or less a beer shop. They can be good when stopping off somewhere as well, but no better than anywhere else for that purpose. They are obviously good places to have a drink but if not after socialisation wonder if that is really worth it when you can go to the offy for much less. Perhaps if you like the atmosphere could understand it. For dancing, the chain bars tend to put something on at weekends, but that can be quite cheesy music, if you are something more serious than a nightclub that specialises in something (as opposed to the ones you find everywhere which will play much the same ), for rock music there is usually a pub in each town that puts on something but some of them can be simply covers bands which is perhaps not quite the same! Always worth exploring anyhow.
