Scars and a Week to Cover.

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
This thread could either go here or in Style & Appearance, but I thought I'd get a better response here :)

As some of you may know from an old thread I posted a couple of months ago, my prom is comming up (not this week but next week) and I was really wary about what I was going to wear because of the scars on my arms and that I didn't want to wear sleeves because it's just going to look so odd and so blatent (if it wasn't enough) about whats going on.

Anyway, I've sort of avoided the whole 'cut' thing.. and if I do it then I'll avoid my arms so they've sort of had some type to heal.

Saying that, they've scarred and I can still really notice them, but I don't know if thats because I know they're there.

Anyway, to the point I'm actually wanting to make.
Is there any make-up or anything I can do just to make them 'dissapere' for a night?
I have just under two weeks to do this and I really can't afford some of those specialist make-up kits that supposedly cover your scars.
For ages I was thinking about getting bio-oil but my local boots didn't seem to sell them and I never got round to buying it online and now it's a bit late isn't it?
I've spoken to my mentor about it and she said wear long gloves (which wouldn't help) or to wear a shawl or something, but it wouldn't help cover and I can't really get her help anymore or any other teacher that knows because I've left school now and the next time I see her will be 2 days before my prom and that wont help.

So any suggestions guys?! I really want to wear my prom dress, I wanna go to prom! Thank you..

The concealers that are like lipsticks are good at covering stuff because they're so thick. Or mix foundation with talcum powder. Or get a pair of cheap pretty primark tights, cut the waistband and feet off, and then you have a kind of pair of sleeves that you can wear under or over your dress.

Bio-oil and expensive scar flattening products won't have a noticeable effect in a week.

I was once told by my GP that you can order skin camouflage make up from the Red Cross but I don't know if that's still true.

I've tried concealers and some foundation, it did make my arm look a bit orange and I think it was still noticeable, but that was just a quick try - so I might try again and see if I can get it to work :)

I looked on the website, they don't have any that close to me, but I'm going to try and get somewhere
Thank you that seems really helpful! :)

I think I once had a sample of the makeup sent out, might be worth giving them a call.

i'm going to try the make up again, and might get some of that moisturiser that eventually gives you a tan? :S

I'm really scared I wont be able to go to prom.. :/

I did read in a link that Dot.Dot posted that fake tan is quite good. I've never tried, but my sister swears by the wipes.

Do you think that might be worth a try? Get a friend who uses it regularly to help!

boots do scar cover up makeup called keramask that i have found really good for covering. I didnt bother posting about it before coz u said you cant afford much but instead of wasting money on foundation and fake tan this is something that is worth investing in.

I've never heard of that, sounds really good, I might look it up :)

You make a good point about spending lots on things that don't work well - bleepy, if you can get trials or samples of products before spending on things than can be expensive, it's worth it. I know it's all a bit last-minute for you though.

they do it in larger Boots stores and when i went to get some (three years ago now and its only just run out) you make an apointment with a specially trained person who is sensitive to what you are using it for ( - mine were blatant wrist scars from a botched suicide attempt) in a private room who tries several colours and shows you which to get, how to blend them to match your skintone and what ratio to use of each colour to get it right. once you know which colours you need you can buy it without consultation or on the internet. I needed two colours to blend together to match my skintone. after five mins it's dry and you cannot see any marks (although obviously raised scars will still be raised but colourless so less noticeable) it is waterproof and smudgeproof (although i never checked the waterproof thing out) and it lasts all day. I reccomended it to a muslim friend of mine when she had a black wrist tattoo done that she wanted to cover for family gatherings and when she used it you couldn't see anything. I found it to be really good stuff tbh.

I've heard of keramask, I looked on the boots website but they don't seem to sell it, or is it only in stores and are you sure they still stock it as I've never seen it before? and I can't get into a 'bigger' boots until thursday :S

And thank you for the link G-Raffe, but it's the american website :/

I've had wearing a shrug/bolero/cardigan suggested to me and normally I would but I can't find one suited for my dress as it's one shouldered and also it's just going to make me look out of place because every single person will be showing their arms and I just don't want to make it so blatent :/ and I just looked in my bank and I am extremely low in money...

But thank you guys so much for all your suggestions, I should've posted this weeks ago, leaving things at the last minute isn't good!

I know, I hate wearing shrugs all the time. My sister's wedding is currently causing a sleeveless nightmare.

Honestly, though, you don't stand out if you cover your arms. I always think I do but more often than not I get compliments on whatever I'm wearing 'to cover up'.

it was never displayed on the shelves as it was a bit specialist. I can't find it on the website but i vaguely remember i had to ring around the stores to find where it was stocked so that wmay be worth a try. Some people do it on ebay but u really need to know which shades you need to blend. if they have stopped doing it it may be worth phoning anyway as they might have alternatives.

If it helps, Im really pale so i had the lightest shade and the white to blend on a ratio of 1:2.

Depending on where you're trying to cover up, a nice big set of bangles may well do the trick perfectly.

Claires Accessories could be your friend at this point.

Just a quick update as it's prom tommorow (:
I was in school on tuesday & saw the head of CP or something like that and i asked her to check my arms to see if it was noticable (i had put on some makeup to try cover up) She said she couldn't see anything, that it was covered and the small mark she could see she just said looked like i just grazed my arm or something.
I'm still not convinced as I can still see it and it's just making me freak out slightly.
I then went to boots and bought some of johnsons holiday skin (says it'll add to a natural tan in 3-4 days) so hopefully that'll help.
She also lent me a shawl so that should help cover.. and none of the boots seem to offer the keramask :(
And SM, it's on like my upper arms - the ones around my wrist aren't noticeable and they've never had to be covered up so thats at least a positive, but thank you! :)

I'm still bricking it, hopefully I will go and not pull a 'sicky' to get out of it... I'll let you know if i go or not & Thanks a lot guys, really :)

I think they'll always be a lot more noticeable to you than other people!

I hope you do go and that you have a brilliant time :)

    (.... and I wanna see pics :P!)

Bleepy if it's any consolation I went to my leavers' ball with massively visible scars (because they were too recent for make up to take, my own fault) which I didn't manage to keep covered. You can see them in the photos, but no one said anything and I still had a great time.

It sounds like you've found a really good way to cover yours, so please don't pull out; you'll only end up regretting it.

I know I'll regret it so I'm just prepping myself up for it now :) I would do that but I really don't have the balls :L and the people at my school... they're bitches, they'll find some way to dig at me - but I suppose if I do it'll give me the push to move schools for my a levels... win, win? :P

Moving schools is a different issue, but if you think it will be good for you I would encourage you to consider it. Two years isn't forever but it's long enough.

I wasn't trying to encourage you to go without covering up, just trying to suggest that even the worst-case scenario is not a disaster. Have fun!

get those legwarmers kind of cloth for your arms? Might look good if it fits the dress. Do they even exist or do I have a brainfart?

If the people at school are bitches, I think they are more likely to judge you on your dress/hair. Don't worry about that though, as I'm sure you'll look great xx
