Scale and polish cost me £16.50. Don't know how much whitening costs, because I've not had that done.

Scale and polish is a deep clean but not a whitening treatment, that's free if you're in FT education and under 19 or £16.50 iotherwise.

Tooth whitening is a cosmetic operation and not usually covered under NHS.

No. Plaque is really bad for your teeth and your gums. Whitening is pure appearances.

Anyone got any guesses to how much a whitening would cost? I'm technically on study leave so I only have to go in for exams, idk if that counts as full time ed.

I have no idea to be honest, might be worth ringing up a dentist.

It counts as full time education if you're still at school, but it is cosmetic so the NHS won't usually pay for it. That means it is a private treatment and the dentist is free to charge what they want for it. You're probably looking at about £50 for it full whack but you might get a discount as you're still a child in FT education.
