How does JustGiving work?

Mum wants to do a sponsored walk for NAS. (National Autistic Society) I suggested that she uses JustGiving. When it comes to donating, how exactly does it work? I seem to remember that I just gave my card / bank details and that was it?

    My favourite subject at the moment as I am doing a charity motorcycle ride this summer ...

    What exactly do you want to know? I'm assuming that NAS is already registered with JustGiving. It's a big charity, so I'm sure it is. So what your mum would do would be to go to the JustGiving site and register. She picks her chosen charity from the list of registered charities and is presented with a template page with the charity's logo etc already there. All she then has to do is add a photo or two and some text about her walk: what the charity means to her, why she's doing the walk, etc., and write a personalised "thank you" that will be sent to anyone who donates. That's just about it. The page will go live immediately and an alert will be sent to the charity to tell them that your mum is raising money for them. Your mum can then copy the link and send it to all her friends by email. As you know, when they open the page, there will be a list of other donations and they just enter the amount and click the button.

    Does that help?

    I'm pretty sure that most of the relevant information is to be found on their site;

    Yes there is a slight cut on behalf of justgiving, but bearing in mind I raised nearly £300 for my last sponsored event, all of which was online donations of which some were not even in the UK.

    Indeed G-raffe, yes JustGiving take a percentage. We argued amongst ourselves about this. The charity themselves are charged £15 per month on top of the 5% fee on donations. However, the percentage taken is taken from the whole GiftAid (tax deductible) amount, so the charity actually gain more than your donor's pledge - although less than they might do through an alternative 'Gift Aided' arrangement. Our view was that the charity would benefit through the trustworthy system and simplified donor payments/accounting procedures that JustGiving offer.

    If you're thinking about using JustGiving to raise sponsorship, but may be want to set up a trial donor page before commiting to a real charity fundraising page, you can use their demo charity page: http://www.justgiving.com/jgdemo

    Today's almost integrated nature of the internet and technology means that things like justgiving can and often are the best and most effective way to raise money.

    Id rather a charity get 95% of a £1,000 worth of donations than 100% of £500 worth.
