Where do you stand politically?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I figured if we're getting an idea of where we stand religiously in the other thread, we can also get an idea of what platforms we stand on politically.

I, myself, am a left-leaning Libertarian. Paleolibertarian, to be precise.

    left libertarian

The last time I took one of those Nolan chart tests I was on the bubble between centrist and libertarian, which seems about right. The more I learn, the more libertarian I think I feel myself leaning, though.

I can't remember where I sat the last time I did this test, but I think I was like most on here. Left Lib.

    Magocracy.

Left libertarian, somewhere around the Dalai Lama according to Political Compass.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
How strange. Maybe the compass is broken because everyone is getting the same thing. XD
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen so many libertarians on one forum before. xD

Haha. If you all don't mind me asking, where do you guys stand on some of the key issues?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Remind us, what are the 'key issues', according to the clan?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    Anything you feel is important...?

I stand to the lib left, you?

That's not what I mean. I mean what do you believe about some of the individual issues. Ex: Gay marriage, abortion, the environment, gun control, taxes, welfare, immigration, drugs, energy, unions, health care, education, et cetera.

    ok well, you first please.

    Sure.

I'm in favor of gay marriage/civil unions, but believe government benefits should be abolished.

    I'm neutral on abortion.

I believe the climate change fiasco is a scam.

I do not believe in gun control.

I believe in lower taxes with a flat tax system in place and actually respecting the hard work taxpayers put in to attain their wealth.

I believe in welfare, but limited welfare. The goal should be to get able people working.

I believe in securing our borders and making it easier for legal immigrants to come into this country.

I believe in legalization for at least marijuana and LSD.

I believe we should drill in Alaska and stop depending on foreign oil.

I believe unions started off good, but their current system is full of corruption.

I am opposed to universal health care.

I believe in separation of education and state with a voucher system.

    Your turn.

People who want to get married should be able to.

Abortion, agree with it being legal. Would go as far as extending the right to beyond birth and legalising infanticide in certain circs.

Don't care whether climate change is real or not.

I think guns should still not be common place; I don't trust most people with a keyboard and internet access, let alone a gun.

Taxes, dunno, we should redistribute the wealth a bit more.

Welfare, useful, we should redistribute the wealth a bit more though.

Borders, not sure - not given it enough considered thought to contribute.

    Drugs, legalise :D.

    Alaska- is that a pudding?

    Unions, should be useful.

Health care - free for all, love the nhs.

Education should be accesible to all, free would be great.

Well, given your responses to those issues, you wouldn't be Libertarian, though you would be left. I'd say you're more of a Progressive Liberal with advocacy of Socialism (potentially a Mixed Economy, depending on how progressive liberal.)

    Um, thanks. LOL

Distribute wealth, control guns and nationalize health care? By "left lib" you must mean that the left libs pummel you on a daily basis...

    Classical liberal

I don't care if someone is gay or not, why should the state decide what a relationship is?

I believe in a woman's right to choose

I believe that the climate is changing, I'm just not convinced on the cause.

I believe that only outlaws should have guns, because we see what happens when anyone can have them.

I believe in the state taxing us as much as is actually needed to support health, education, military and justice

I believe in welfare because if we can help people then we should

I believe in free movement of individuals

I believe in legalization of drugs

I believe we should stop depending on oil full stop.

I believe capitalism started off good, but the current system is full of corruption.

I believe that access to health care is an inalienable right

I believe that the state should not legislate against things, but legislate for things - i.e. less banning because you don't like what someone else does

Actually, countries with more widespread gun ownership have fewer gun fatalities that countries with less. Something about how an attacker thinks twice about hurting you when he sees that you're armed...

Maybe I don't live in fear of this mysterious "attacker" you talk about.

There is no way I am getting into a gun debate on these boards again though. We will never convince each other so it's best left there.

What statistics are you basing that on? If you said fewer fatalities, I might believe you, but fewer gun fatalities? Not according to any stats I've ever seen.

It's not about being afraid, it's about the simple fact that gun fatalities occur less often in nations where the people are allowed to have guns. Did you know that when the UK banned handguns in '98, gun fatalities skyrocketed by 340% over the next 5 or 6 years? I'm not trying to sway you to my opinion, I'm offering a legitimate statistic.

Basically, your point was that when the people are allowed to have guns, bad things happen, so I commented and pointed out that the exact opposite has been shown to be true. Just sharing information, because you appear misinformed.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
But that's because guns are outlawed, how bad would it get if guns were legal again the UK? Gun fatalities in the UK probably skyrocketed TO the fear factor they hold making their value higher and their illegal importing more valuable. I don't dare think of the UK having guns legal.
